Default VW 385 Tool Set

Anyone in the DMV have one. I would like to take some measurements to model/replicate the RP backlash tool, VW521/4. I’m looking for the items 10-13 in the picture below. Thanks.

I think Matt DeMaria has one, or at least a clone that he manufactured. You could probably find info in some old threads.

Note you don't need that tool to measure backlash - there is a procedure in the workshop manual to bolt a not-so-special fixture to the axle flange and then measure the play with a micrometer.

You do need it to measure the pinion depth however...or you could go old school and paint the gear faces and observe the marking pattern.

This is a nice thread on the less-complex porsche tool:

That's the beauty of the 3d printer and CAD. The complex becomes easy and elegant.

What are you going to print it in--does your printer print strong metal? Will plastic work?

Ive printed a few in PLA. Its pretty stout, I printed it with 5 walls and 65% infill. All the force that should be placed on the tool should be the spring pressure of the dial indicator. I made a couple improvements after fitting it for the first time. I wasnt a fan of the pin fit for the stylus holder so I ended up printing threads screw it into the main body. Added a captive nut in the collet wedge. Still has the adjustable length stylus. With it installed and the assembled diff on the bench I was able to spin it on the table without it slipping or bending the mandrel.
