Default 993/4

Been looking at 993's lately and found that 4 wheel drive cars sell at a significant discount. My interest is for a fun streetable hobby car. I've never driven a /4 car and I remember that they were considered a poor option as a track car. Any opinions from the group regarding use as a street car?

Berry,
993 C4 is a great car. Like all all-wheel drive cars, C4 is heavier than C2, but even if you planned to track it, that would not matter.
There was someone ?older? like us who tracked a red 964 C4 and I raced against a guy from CT in mid-2000s with a C4. Their biggest complaint was the weight and tendency to under steer. IIRC, 993 C4 system was improved over 964 and was less.
If 96 MY and later, 993 had some issues with valve train (?) which needed attention. That is well-know issue if you search the internet.
Good luck.

Barry, I've driven an AWD car daily since 1991. No issues whatsoever on the street for past 356 and 911 drivers if the AWD is biased towards the rear, which I imagine Porsche would have done with the 993.

I had a 993 C4S for a couple of years and it was heavy and understeered like a pig. Fresh tires and an alignment did nothing to help the car perform better. Mine was a 1996 and as mentioned above the SAI was a bit of an issue.

Now I daily drive a 1999 C2 and it is much lighter (very low optioned car 2901 lbs) with more power (296 hp) vs. a 993 and drives better all around. Also the HVAC simply works, period full stop.

I highly recommend that you drive one in stock form that was built prior to August 1998 before you purchase a 993

Only drove RWD 993's. But don't forget you can convert the AWD to 2WD. The 993 system is not filled with the electronics that the 964 had. Much simpler system.
