Hello,
Looking for advice / opinions... I've been doing DE off and on for several years with my '01 986 Boxster Base and really enjoying it. My suspension is upgraded w/LCA, coil overs, drop links, sway bars, bump stop. -2.5 camber front and rear. I do drive the car often on the street and to the track for events. This July I 'used up' my staggered 18" Sport Cup 2 tires, so I need to buy new tires. After discussing setup with some of the spec Boxster guys, I've decided to go with a square 255/40R17 set of track tires. I have a trailer to get the tires to the track. I'm looking for the best value possible. The Spec rules calls for the Toyo, but I've looked at a couple others and this is where I'm looking for advice/opinions. I'm assuming no Hankook RS-4s are available in your size?

what run group do you run in? unless you are long time advanced and like to buy new tire every couple weekends, stay away from the RR's or Rc-1. those are 40tw race tires that last about 10 heat cycles. you are also not running enough front camber for those tires.
look for a 200tw tire for HPDE.

I’ve had pretty good luck with hankook ventus v12 for DE duty. They are soft enough to grip well. I’ve run these on my mini for years. Fairly cheap and last well enough for street use.

Well, welcome down the slippery slope! Sounds like you have a fun track car.
fwiw, the "spec" tires, are spec for a reason - they balance a cost/wear/use pattern pretty well (for racers, who otherwise would run Hoosiers). Nothing worse than buying a cheap tire and quickly learning why it was the cheap tire. Also, the more you drive, your own preferences might begin to show with regards to tire feel and characteristics .. stiff sidewall or a softer sidewall.. noise from tread patterns etc. fwiw, I've used Falken Azenis rt615s and find they have good grip/wear characteristics. I think they also have a newer version (rt660?)

Since I don't need to drive on them to the track I had them turned around on the rims to get some more life out of them. Thanks for the comments & suggestion. |
