Richard and I were chatting about how we got into our respective careers while I was between sessions at VIR. He told me that he got into newspaper work by accident. He was recruited to join his college paper because he was a good typist. The rest was history. RIP, Richard.

Funny how life works like that sometimes. Got into newspapers because he could type, and ended up being a massive influence on the whole industry. Richard was such a nice, unassuming, humble guy that every time you find out more about the things he accomplished you're just blown away even more.

If I helped found a major, household-name company and my ideas massively changed and entire industry, I'd have that shit printed on t-shirts and never shut up about it. Richard was the complete opposite.

He will be missed! Besides all the other things he did he also raced carts for many years. Like talon I known him for many years. He’d mentioned the cancer some years ago. But i through the he’d said he was out a head of it.
Another side effect of Covid; didn’t get to say goodby to a good PCA friend!

This is very sad news indeed. Like everyone, I really enjoyed the times I was lucky enough to speak with Richard, and I definitely enjoyed sharing a lift with him at Tech. I knew he worked for USAToday, but had no idea how influential he was. But I definitely remember his time at DerV, and how he really was at the helm of something special there, so I guess it is no surprise that he had such an impact at his "day job."

He will truly be missed.

RIP Richard.

I had many conversations with Richard over the years and one of the many concerned flying. My ground instructor was USA Today's Jack Williams. I mentioned that Jack gave me an autographed copy of The Weather Book at the end of ground school. Richard mentioned that he had worked on the book with Jack. I dug out the book later that day and found that Richard was mentioned by Jack in the foreword. I later tried to get Richard to sign the page at a club gathering but he didn't feel comfortable taking the credit for the great graphics. I agree he was a very humble guy.
