Default Air-Cooled Rebuild

Gentlemen/Ladies:

Maybe I've been out of the game too long, but I saw on Pelican Parts where a Marine in NC did a rebuild on an '88 engine and "With shipping and supplied parts (new alternator, M&K exhaust) my total engine build was $38,206.00.".

1. Does this make sense?
2. Have I owned my car too long (since 1983)?

This type of nonsense ensures we're upside down and in a position that can never be recovered. I know, cars are NOT an investment, but Jesus Christ!

What I'm asking, is in your experience, is this number in the ballpark? If so, I'm going to sell and buy a CaymanS. Jeez.

I believe you can spend as much as you want when rebuilding these motors depending upon the condition of the motor at the time and your end goal. I believe you can rebuild a stock motor that has not been abused for $10K. Granted that assumes the major components are all in speck and good. That also means you pull and install yourself. I am basing this on an '87 3.2 I had "refreshed" with complete heads/valves, guides, bearings, rings, chains, and changed the cams to 964 cams. Went with a lightly used set of pistons and cylinders from someone upgraded to 3.4, as my pistons and cylinders needed work. The mechanic who did the work, Bruce Abbott is a regular on Pelican (flat6pac) and has been rebuilding these motors for 40 years. ScottyB is the guy who knew Bruce and has done other engines with him and recommended him to me. Bruce sourced the pistons and cylinders from one of his other engine builds. I expect that engine to be installed in the next 2 weeks....hopefully, and fired up. I am looking forward to hearing it run.

Ah, Kurt. . . I got perhaps the only good one that came out of there. Before they tried to steal everything. The last time I was at Fontana, I still had a 135 mph entry speed into Turn 1 with my 914. Of course, the high tech guys were running at 165 on the upper lines.
I'm more thinking about the 911 SC. . .

I've been hearing figure $20k for a rebuild on a 3.0 or 3.2. Replacement P&Cs extra, if needed...

'Course if the transmission needs a rebuild as well, tack on at least $3k these days.

Thanks for that. I've got 135K on my SC, had an upper-half done when I came back from
Desert Storm (popped head studs after almost a year of not driving it). Gearbox is about to need rebuilding, but seeing these numbers almost makes you want to go to BMW or something. . . BTW, over 30 year member of PCA. I feel special. . .

I think many that have good air cooled skills know they can charge “book” and clock every little wrench turn over and above book as well. It does take time, tools and true skills to do a good motor build and they are not something that lends well to mass production.

I have seen people charge far more for far less in white collar work.

I charge T&M and it is on the less expensive side but this lets me pick and chose my clients, the work and the timeframe of completion.

I'll let you know what my 2.7 rebuild comes back at once it's done.
I went with the no-rush option....that saves a lot of money.

idk. At one point, they were $10K cars needing $10K rebuilds. Stands to reason that a $40K car needs a $40K rebuild?

lol... motormeister.. are they still around in the Aircooled game or did they venture out to 986/996 rebuilds
