Default Mini Project: My 82 SC Suspension Refresh

Finally getting to this. Over the weekend I started with the disassembly.

Disassembly begins.

I warmed up the engine before I put the car on the lift, and drained the oil.

Started at the front.

A lot of that ugly black stuff around the strut mounting.

I tried to clean up a bit of the mess.

Here is the rest of the front suspension.

All this need to be cleaned up.

Removing the original inner pieces from the struts.

Got most of the removed item cleaned up a bit.

A few more parts to clean.

The small stuff I will zinc plate, and the larger items powder coat.

To be continued.

Cheers
Engelbert

Excellent, thanks for posting.

I really like your cleaning process, so much nicer to work with clean parts.

90% of any older car project is cleaning.

Engelbert,

It depends. The lose dirt I usually just scrap off, wash oily stuff off with oil eater. Brake dust with Brake cleaner. Once oil and dirt is off, beat blasting before coating, plating, etc. I also have oil eater in my parts washer.

Continue with the rear suspension disassembly.

In order to remove the T-bars, the side skirt has to come off, which is a good opportunity to clean.

The T-bars came out without a fight.

And the inside of the tube looks clean and no rust.

Now getting the old rubber off is a PITA. One down, one more to go.

Rear suspension hardware after removal.

Got most of it cleaned up a bit.

Back to the front. The hubs are clean. I think I just give them a clear coat of paint.

Got the hardware for the front ready. Just did clear Zinc, no yellow.

Got the cross member and dust shields coated.

Started to clean the wheel wells and the areas where I cannot get later when the suspension is back installed.

More to come.

Cheers
Engelbert

You may have mentioned this before but what are you doing to clean the wheel wells and under the tub? Looks great and I will want to do that to my project.

I use a spray bottle filled with oil eater 1/2 and 1/2 water, a kitchen brush, rags. Messy work.
