Default Why does my transmission fluid look clean, but is dirty

I just drained my transmission fluid on my beater and the fluid was nasty, but the fluid on the dipstick currently does and has always shown nice and clean.

My first guess would have been a busted pump, but when I disconnected one of the cooler lines fluid does pump out. What gives? How is it possible for the diptstick to have clean fluid on it but the rest of the system have some really dirty stuff?

The car is a 1998 Volvo S90 with an Aisin AW30-40LE (seen in some Toyota trucks and a few Lexuses). I'm draining, replacing filter, and flushing the fluid because it started to throw selector switch and lock up solenoid codes.
