I figured I'd start a project thread so I can consolidate updates and questions, and can reference previous ones easier.
I'm starting with a 1979 SC with a 1980 factory 3.1L. It has a 3.2 intake and has been converted to EFI and ignition controlled by Megasquirt. When I bought it, it had a turbo installed, but I removed the turbo while I got the tune straightened out (which may have finally happened). While the turbo power is nice, I greatly prefer the response of NA motors, and with the EFI conversion, response is awesome. Even with half the power, it's still a blast, though I do miss the mid-range torque. The car was 2620lbs when I weighed it, and with recent work I'm pretty sure is has dropped into the 2500s. I'd like to get it down another 200lbs and then decide what I want to do with the motor, if anything. I would like a 3.6 conversion, and I kind of rue not waiting for one, but maybe that will be unnecessary with the reduced weight. Or maybe the turbo will go back on. My goals for the car are to make a fun car I can drive anytime, and can take to the track in place of the M3 occasionally. Depending how it does at the track, maybe it will replace the M3 and I'll see how far I can take it, a la Jack Olsen.

This week I fixed rattle the Wevo shifter had in 3rd and 4th that was driving me up the wall. Soon after I bought the car, I replaced the shift coupler with a Wevo PSJ, and replaced the short shifter with the Wevo. However, whenever the engine had load and there was no spring pressure on the lever (i.e, in 3rd and 4th), I would get a nasty metal on metal rattling sound. The kind that makes you tense up when listening to it on an hour drive instead of relaxing.
This week, I went back to the stock coupler and also installed the rubber boot that goes around the coupler and the hole to the transmission. Now I am rattle free and it's so much nicer driving around. I can finally relax while driving. I also got the RS America door panels installed. I had to go with yellow pull straps of course. And I deleted the radio, because who needs it? Anyone need a CDR-220 or some kicker speakers and Rockford amp? Next goals are a professional tune, replace the fuse panel with a modern bladed one, and roll bar, harnesses, and Evo II seats, unless I can find some leather Recaros for my height.

It’s looking good. That engine is a pretty nifty thing to work with. I was driving around today in my ‘86 Targa, enjoying the aural, tactile and olfactory aspects. What exhaust does your car have?

I think I passed you going the other direction on Sudley Road today... It's hard to miss a yellow 911.

With that special engine, you may be able to sell it for the same price a 3.6 would be.
I know Vicegrip loves the stock 3.6...super reliable with regular servicing.

I’d like to find a set of thick flange SSIs and a Dansk or M&K 2 in - GT3 muffler eventually. Quote:

Dang, that car looks familiar. I think a previous owner may have been active here and in PCA Potomac 6-7 years back.
