Default WTB: Dual Purpose '81-'89 911 SC/Carrera

So, I've scoured the standard sites and have found a couple leads but figured I'd make it official here: after MUCH deliberation, Anisa and I have decided on an '80s 911. For a little while it was a Cayman, then it was a 964/993, and now it's going way downmarket after the realization that we need to be acting like responsible human beings. I had hoped a 964/993 would be a bit more reasonably-priced.

Looking for a modestly-prepped DE/dual purpose car that ideally has some combination of the following:
  • Roll bar
  • Seats/harnesses
  • Lowered and stiffened (plus sway bars) but not kidney-killing
  • All rubber bits maintained/replaced
  • Solid on preventive maintenance
  • Engine/trans in good shape
  • Intake valve
  • SSIs and muffler

Obviously cars that are closer to stock are completely fine, but it would be nice to find something had had at least some of these components already addressed.
Would also be nice to have had a refresh/rebuild at some point, especially if high mileage.

Also, as laughable as it is, AC is a must-have.

This car will be my DD and Anisa's track car.

Any leads? Open to looking anywhere in the US.

Why exclude 78-80 SCs?

You'd be hard pressed to find "good a/c" in a car like this. It's like a warm breeze across an ice cube on the best of days. The rest, you just sweat with the windows up.

Thanks Steve. I was hoping, thanks to my stockpile of R12, that I would be able to get some AC that was at least helpful. Given your experience with both 944s and SC’s, would you rate the 944’s AC that much higher than the SC? Because my old R12 944 was genuinely good. When I bought an R134a 944 it was just “ok”.

Did the Euro SCs not have the magnesium engine issues? Only reason i was looking at ‘81+ was due to the impression that they were more reliable.

My 944 when I bought it had a/c that made it like an icebox. Sadly it broke, but that was some of the best a/c I've ever had. The SC has always been "meh" and I think it might have leaked out over the past 14 years. There are some people on Pelican that swear by the Kuehl and claim to have a/c equivalent to a modern car. I think they have spent a lot of money to get it that way. I have receipts where the PO of my car spent $3000+ on a full a/c refresh at some point.

My understanding was that the 74-77's had the older, less reliable motor, but my knowledge is old. I can't believe how much I have forgotten. The later SCs had bigger ports or something, IIRC, that was one of the few differences.

The U.S. sc 3.0 is a good car but definately lacks power, the 3.2 you can actually tune and get some really good power and torque out of so is something to think of.

915 vs g50......rebuild costs on a g50 are alot higher and parts are getting more expensive on them it seems. And it adds 50 or 60 lbs
Some people really love the g50 though I've been a happy 915 owner.

Great cars but am very partial to the 3.2

Euro 3.0 have CIS....has it's own list of problems mainly dealing with getting them rebuilt ......once they are runnin well they are good but getting them there and keeping then in a sweet spot .ca be a chore.......

The 84-89 3.2 liter cars have EFI, which means they can be chipped to optimize AFR and timing for bolt on exhaust improvements and high octane gas. Helpful.

Haha, point taken. Starting to lean that way. Btw, good to finally have put a face to a name this weekend! Glad you’re back at it.

Actually thought about it. It’s second place and if I can’t find the right 911, then Cayman it is.

Also, I thought all 3.0 cars had CIS? Not just the euros.
