Hall of Fame 912 Targa project.

Figured I would go back to posting up some projects. This one is a friends 912 glass window Targa. Recent clean up and respray done on the shiny side. The plan is to sort the mechanical and lingering rust issues to make it a nice safe Sunday coffee driver. Mileage in only in the 70s and it looks like the suspension was largely untouched. Someone added steel over top of rusted out areas (did I mention that it was a Targa?) and slathered on some kind of seam seal to cover. They then brushed a coat of what might be Por-15 all over EvErYtHiZNg. I like how the rubber bushing resized itself as the Torque tube bushing socket changed from steel to FeOx.

Step one remove the entire suspension and inspect tub.

Step two.

Wow, that torque tube bushing and surround need some work. Also it looks like the bottom section got some sheets glued on. This will be interesting to watch.

Cheers

Going the standard route on that portion of the project. In the past I have sliced out the rust then hand rolled tube ends and retainers to save some $ but I am not bankrolling this one. Getting this kit for Right and left side. They are not cheap but replace many hours of work.

A VG inspired build thread? Just the thing for the fall and winter. Life is good.

when you replace a section like that, do you completely cut out the old then weld in new, or just cut out the rust and weld in the new piece over top of what you may be able to salvage from the original tub?

Depends on the extent. I like to start out by removing only the bad metal and cutting the replacement graft from the repo part. If it is mostly bad then I go after the spot welds and replace it all. Most replacement parts are only part of an original pressing. The above is such an example. Some part pressings such a pans are purchased as a whole and then the bad parts sliced off and presented to the car. A whole pan replacement is a fair amount of work. I find that the replacements don't fit as well as they used to. Your have to flatten and rework all the standing seam edges.

Thanks for the details. I'm really curious about the rear tbar tube and frame rail replacement. Much appreciate any details you provide.

ok, so you keep as much of the original tub as possible and then cut the replacement piece to fit...if it fits in your schedule would love to watch you weld in the new section...

Second Tito's request - I have a project coming up that requires sheet metal repair and would love to see it done correctly including the post weld grinding and clean-up. I assume the post-weld clean-up for VG would be very small but still .....
