This makes no sense to me unless no joy means the car will not move no matter what gear you are in and you tried all of them and it went into gear each time with a cachunk from the rear of the car.

If this is the case then you have no clutch and/or pressure plate working (there is no linkage to the clutch, it is hydraulic). Tow it to the shop and have them pull the transmission and see what's what.
