I know.

But there's a lot of life-long aspiration in tracking an old 911... (I know this a unique sentiment around here...), and I've spent enough time getting passed by idiots on GSX-R 1000s on the straights, and eating their lunch in the infield to the point that I value skill development, not HP. $$$ only gets you so far.

True, but my point from the beginning has been that I want to learn to drive fast, not pay to go fast. This is also a very emotionally-driven pursuit for me. Plenty of cars are fun as hell to drive, but fundamentally, I am a Naval Aviator, therefore, Rule #1 is always in full effect:

Rule #1) Always sound cool on the radios.

My application of that to the track environment has always been:

Always look cool on the track = smooth, not an asshole (see previous), be focused on fun, and learning the craft.

The SC would fit all that well, but the blazin' Heine stuff will have to go. I'm not aware of a Heine contingency program for amateurs, and my beer tastes have long since become far more micro and hoppy.

Good point on E36s and E46s - I'd be driving one by now if my wife could physically drive a stick (she knows how, but can't). BTW, while newer cars are more speed for the $$, an SC will last for hundreds of thousands of miles, possibly not the case with newer cars including Porsches. And will also appreciate. And is a great learning car. And easy (relatively) to work on. And everything can be fixed.

They will not appreciate if they get stuffed into a tire wall. That's the reality of it. Get a car that is rapidly appreciating, and it is a (financial) risk tracking it hard.

I still tack my '87 (theoretically), but not many SCs or Carreras are out there for DEs anymore (there are a lot more in CR then DEs from what I have seen lately)

"not an asshole (see previous)", I would claim this is mutually exclusive with "I am a Naval Aviator" but hey I am retired AF and therefore got to throw that one out as being too tempting to avoid. lol. Expecting a return salvo.

By the way welcome to the Forum.

One more thing you need to realize, (which I am sure you are aware of from riding) is that this sport is more additive that crack (from what I hear) and far more expensive. There are several of us on this forum that started out driving N/A FoFos which are great for learning but seem to be sold off or dumped by the time we got to white - there is a reason for that. Yes, I know there are people in white, black, and at least a few in red that do very well in them but they tend to be SP spec of some sort and the drivers are very experience and/or talented. The point is this: You may want to consider starting out with a starter (for a year of to) and plan on upgrading in a year or two. Your back-ground in motorcycles would make me think that the catch on period will be short and you would have a better idea of your wants and dislikes – and minimize your financial risk.

Good luck with the retirement/transition out of the Military. I am sure you have friends to talk to about this but it can be a bit interesting.

The best advice I ever got was "The great thing about a Military Retirement is that you never have to take a job you do not want - at least for awhile"

There's always some asshole that shows up with a turbo'd Cayman, GT2 or Cup car. Only a matter of time before they ball it up since clearly they have no interest in learning how to drive, they only want to drive fast.
