Default WTB cheap winter car

Anyone have an old car cheap I'm interested in buying as this car is just to get me through winters.

Budget is $1,000-$2,000 depending upon what the car may need to pass MD inspection.

Can you up your budget a bit? I would not want to rely on a $1000 car to get me home if the weather turns real bad while I'm at work. For not too much more money you can probably find a better used Cherokee or Subaru? Hate to see a post in February that 88carrera died after being stranded on 495.

2nd that, a reliable thousand dollar car is the holy grail. If you o need something for this year, maybe buy something more expensive and sell next year.

Try Craigslist, If you don't mind a van, you can find something like a Dodge Caravan for your price range. They made lot's of em, and they go for cheep.

I've seen a few Passats with the 1.8T engine. Anyone have experience with them?

A reputable FWD (yesss...including the Ford Focus ) can be made into a good winter warrior with a set of narrow, cheap steel wheels, and a set of Vredestein snow tires installed at all 4 corners.

They are beasts in the snow, and the tread compound is made to stay compliant in low temps (summer performance tires get rock hard in low temps). HOWEVER, don't drive on them year-round, as they will wear quickly in warmer temps.

AFAIK, Radial Tire is still a Vredestein dealer.

You couldnt give me one. Seem to be one of those cars where some love them and they are tanks and others cant wait to move on.

Best winter cat I've owned was a civic. The only limiting factor was ground clearance, traction was excellent until the floor became a sled.

Paul at Radial Tire has suggested different winter tires for each of our different vehicles. What a fantastic resource - all of his suggestions were spot on (even though they often conflicted directly with, for example, Consumer Reports). I [i]think[i/] he put Vredsteins on Ben's WRX.
