Very nice job men. I agree brake caliper studs are the way to go especially on 981s.

Excellent textbook writeup -- the quality of your work is genuinely impressive. Not sure if it's called out in the original post but anyone doing this should look for the extra-long Helicoils (~20-25mm) because the standard-length ones (~15mm) aren't long enough for my comfort level.

Thank you guys for the HOF and all the compliments! This was a fun little project, particularly because we were able to reverse something that looked like a bad situation.

We were already planning to align the car, so we just disconnected the toe arm at the suspension carrier end (which is an eccentric alignment bolt). This allowed us to angle the wheel carrier out and made the drilling very simple. A 90 degree drill and a short drill bit would be necessary otherwise - exactly as you said.

Saved by the ingenuity and willingness of friends, and Dorki regulars, to help out at the last minute!

I pulled the threads right out of my front caliper yesterday. I'm sure this was partially caused by overuse but I also have a strange problem with the calipers. The inside of the caliper bolt holes have become threaded somewhat and the bolts don't slide through. I have to screw them through. I believe this leads to the possibility of the bolts pulling on the wheel carrier threads when installing them. Especially if the caliper isn't flush with the carrier. Has anyone else's calipers done this?

Martin and Ion came over last night and helped me install a Time-Sert. We'll, actually Ion did all the work and Martin and I most watched. and learned.

Thanks so much Martin and Ion for saving the day and 987kmns and Ion for building the jig.

I'll be installing caliper studs before the next event. Should have done that a long time ago

crap, i really have to cert my rear calipers. i keep saying that. fronts were done years ago and despite the fact that the rears rarely need to come off, i know its just a matter of time before a D'OH!

Are there any disadvantages to putting in studs? It would seem to be easier to line up the caliper when replacing, and of course not stripping the threads on the strut.
