Default Disposing of an abandoned car

A friend of mine in Virginia has a car on their property that they were storing for another friend. Unfortunately, they need to have it moved and he has been ignoring their request for several months. The car is in pieces and was a project car that never really went anywhere. (It's not a valuable car so don't start scavenging for parts yet! )

Anyway, they want it gone but I am curious about what legal steps they should take before having it hauled away.

Thanks,
BB.

I think there's a legal process of notifying the DMV of the abandoned vehicle on your property. The DMV attempts to contact the owner for a period of time, 90 days or something like that, after which they will issue you a title for the vehicle. Once you have title to the car, you can do as you wish. Many charities will accept donated cars, regardless of condition, and will come tow it away for you.

If the friend wants to maintain friendship with the car's owner and does not want the car he should be nice once more and call owner to let them know on X date it is being towed. If said date arrives call a towing co and let them take it from there. (Literally and figuratively) Land owner does not have to contact the owner or dither around with DMV. His land his call stay or go. The towing companies deal with non title holder tows all the time

If he wants to keep the car it gets a bit less simple. As said he will need to go through DMV.

Ultimately, they don't want to keep the car, they just want it gone. I can't comment on maintaining the friendship but I think they are pretty fed up at this point so...

One call and done then. Many towing companies don't mind abandoned cars. They do the salvage paperwork in bulk and even the junkers often have a little $ left in em' as parts/scrap.

Or if you want the tax deduction of a charitable donation.

If you don't care about the donation and deduction and just want it gone, then yeah no need for the DMV part.

Totally. Unfortunately, there is too much assembly required for a beat up Honda Civic.
