I can handle just about anything while driving......except for glare ice.
Once, I was almost home after working late. Cold rain/ice mix coming down. As soon as I turned off the main, salted road, I saw the sheen and knew it wasn't good. I slowed and stopped just as the downhill portion started, and turned on my flashers. Below me were cars all over the road facing in all directions. A couple of cars came up behind me and didn't slow down. As they went by brake lights came on, and their fun began. I watched 4 or 5 cars turn into pinballs as they bounced off curbs, poles, a hydrant, and each other. It was so bad, when I tried to get out of my car, as soon as I took my foot off the brake pedal, the rear wheels with the parking brake engaged, started sliding as the front wheels rolled. I got back in and managed to creep down to the intersecting road where I was able to turn right and stop on level ground. The other "experience" was on the way to Snowshoe for a skiing weekend. Again, left late after work, and around midnight was about 20 miles from the resort on the mountain roads. As we climbed one mountain, the drizzling rain started freezing on the road surface. All of a sudden my 240Z had -0- traction and was just spinning its tires. I managed to drive onto the gravely shoulder which was rougher and gave me some traction. I lowered all the tires to around 20 psi, which helped a bit. Later got nothing but spinning tires around a banked corner. Decided to have Cindy drive while I got out and tried to push us back onto the gravel shoulder. Both of us ended up sliding away from the car on the slightly banked road. After scrambling our way back to the car, we were able to get going again. It took me 3 hours to go 8 miles that nite.
