The 2 hands thing is for Down unless some code has changed. One hand to hold out the automatic mechanical lock in the unlocked condition and the other hand to command the lift down. Auto mechanical lock is to start within 6 inches of movement and continue full stroke. On the up stroke it is required to make a sound to note that it is working and not bypassed hence the clank-clank-clank a a lift rises.
My lift is certified but still has manual unlock on each post. I have to pull and release a cable on each carriage to let the life descend. The lift clanks both posts on the up but I can lift unlock both of the safeties and leave it in unlocked condition. One handy aspect is I can unlock one side, lower the lift and let will stop on one lock only. The other side will continue on down until the cables go tight. I get a 2 to 4 inch sag which has been useful when draining some tank or line on a car. I can make the car lean an bit right or left if needed. Don't try that at home. For novelty use only. To do this is Pure Compressed Stupid so just don't.

You can eliminate the annoying 'clang clang' by wiring the safety releases is the unlocked position. More then one shop I have been in has some lifts like that... We've had to remove some of those wires at Tech sessions before.

Even with all this the human factor is still present and strong. Plenty of dented catch bowls on oil and coolant recovery tankers and distorted FM rated rag bins. In some cases the 2 hands needed to lower is less safe IMO. When the power and control unit is in the bench and not on the post you have to lower the lift with it to your back. Looking with your ears only = dented up stuff that the tech forgot to remove from under the car.

Lift ordered tonight. I went with the BendPak XPR-9-LP. This is the low height lift that will fit easily in my garage with no ceiling modification. I really debate going with the XPR-10a (asymetric 12' no floor plate). Like a lot. The tipping point for the XPR-9 was talking to Vicegrip he informed me that because my ceiling joists run perpendicular to the lift, I'd have to re-engineer a lot of the ceiling to stay within code. Like an idiot I'd planned to box in the top of the lift an leave the joists exposed. Nice rustic look right? According to the national building code, no. I was already leaning towards the XPR-9 before my discussion with Kurt, though. Mainly because with the smaller lift, I can actually plan out exactly where I want the lift to go and then install. So that decision has been made.

Perfect! Your lift will be installed right after you have finished your car projects
Going to pick up another maxima in order to get the value out of the lift?

Good price for a hassle free install. I am thinking about the xpr-10a-lp and may give those guys a call. But I am still months away...
What is the thought on the asymmetric lifts for 911? I see how effective they are for front engine cars. Will they still work properly for back heavy 911? Granted the 911 is not that heavy...

No issues assuming you load it properly. I'm getting a xpr-10a-lp too, just need to decide on wide or narrow.
Good source jazz, thanks.
