flatsixcrazy, if you're still shopping, there's a fairly large gun show this weekend in Chantilly at the Dulles Expo Center (http://www.thenationsgunshow.com)

I have medium sized hands and a 1911 style pistol with the 1911 mainspring housing fits me well but the 1911A1 style makes the grip a little large.
If you're looking at high capacity 9mm's, the Browning Hi Power also comfortable.

I sold my Delta Elite (and 12 mags...) a long time ago.

What is a good 'basic' 1911 nowadays - FMJ vs paper, not IPSC or IDPA? No carry, no home defense, etc. all those are covered, and then some.

I am looking at a used Kimber 1911 vs ... What would you suggest? $600 or less very general guideline.

The Chantilly show is this weekend. I load my own, and my son is interested in learning on Big Blue. A 1911 will encourage... learning.

I was wondering about the maybe too basic Rock Island models, but I haven't shopped semis in a long while.

I'm tempting by a Rock Island 1911. Nice/decent out of the gate but for a few hundred you can make it very nice. Hard to the the /$$

I'm very happy with my Rock Island 1911.

I've come across many people who bash them but it was $430 out the door at a gun show and hasn't had a single failure after about 1,000 rounds.

The hammer does occasionally bite me, the sights aren't the best and upgrading the grips with Hogue checkered ones made a huge difference. But still, while I bought it as a toy, it has proven to be reliable enough for me to carry it from time to time.

BB.

So many 9mm sidearm options out there, where do you start? I've spoken with a few friends who shoot and own and the they both said a Glock is a nice reliable choice, but nicer options are a Sig P226 and one likes the Walther PPQ and the H&K VP9.

I have a USP Compact and a full size XD-9 (bought back when they were a new thing). I may sell one of those, and I have always liked 1911 style. My son has really enjoyed shooting them when I borrow one for the range.

I will see if I can 'canoe' over to the show this weekend. After that, a better .22 - my old S&W 422 is about done for. Maybe a Ruger Mk II (or modern equivalent).

Punching paper at night with a suppressed .177 break barrel. Watch out for this one, she learned well, goes into the zone and can put round #2 in hole #1.
