I know this depends on how the p.o. drove the car but would a clutch be nearing replacement after 60,000 miles?
I also read that I should pull plug #2 and #5 and inspect for burning oil. If evident that may indicate cylinder wall scoring?

My 911 needed a clutch when I got it at 34k, and once inside it was clear that this was the 2nd one. So, yes, entirely possible based on driver.

With respect to the second question, yes pull plugs to see if they are oily. If they are borescope it.
Look for : The most popular cylinders seem to be #2, #4, and #6. One of the symptoms will be a tapping sound when cold dissappearing when warm in the early stages. No visible smoke because the cat is eating it, although there is a little swing from the rear o2's.. In the later stages intermittant tapping cold or warm. Now we have visible smoke. The rear o2's are swinging because the cat(s) are done. Either stage the engine is done. Have seen 4 since January. |

It seems that this is happening on 2002 onwards to the brand new moderls of non-metzger engines.

In looking to buy a pre-owned car, I assume a PPI would pick up on this?

You may have to stipulate the PPI includes pulling the plugs and if oily doing more. Quality of PPIs aren't equal and seldom mean the same thing to all people. Comes down to the shop and how much you want to spend.
