Hi everyone,
I am lining up some test drives this weekend for various 2005-2006 Boxsters. What are your opinions on the two engines? Do I really need to spend the extra money on the 3.4l? Pricing on the 2.7l is $17-18k and about $25-26k for the 3.4l. I was thinking maybe saving money on the 2.7l in case the engine blows I have funds to swap out the engine? This will be a fun weekend car and maybe some auto-x next year.

No one ever regrets buying an "S" vs a base model. More features, more performance. That always seems nice. Likely better resale too. Considering they could be optioned up nearly the same, find one that suits your likes - color combo, good condition and the options you want (heated seats? Litronics? Full leather? )
That said, I loved my 986 base 2.7. Didn't really feel that it gave much up to the same year S.

S, No question and no regrets. Engines are exactly equally likely to blow. You will miss the torque in autocross. Might not notice on street except for the occasional, whoah Nelly smile.

Another way to look at this
Take the S money and look at a 2009 boxster 987.2, which can be had for the same $'s. You would have a better motor.

Thank you everyone. Strange that there are only ten 2009 Boxsters for sale in all the USA on Autotrader.

Don't be afraid to look on Renn List or call places like TPC. The Levitas boy helped me find my 996 GT3. It was in California, but when spending tens of thousands, the $1500 to get it home was not really a factor.
