Default L.E.D. bulb: watts, lumens, oh my

I have a light fixture in my carport that uses four 25 watt incandescent bulbs. It does not provide enough light and there is a warning sticker on the fixture that says do not exceed 25w due to overheat/ fire hazard.

So I was thinking of replacing the builds with l.e.d.'s. I know you don't rate LEDs with watts but with lumens, but to compare apple to oranges an equivalent "25w" led draws 4 watts and outputs 200 lumens.

Can I safely replace those bulbs with let's say 700 lumen led that draws 10 watts (60 watt incandescent equivalent)?

Same principle right? Don't draw more than the wiring is designed to handle?

Big ass cost per lumen too There are cheaper led fixtures if you don't mind slightly less fancy fittings

My current ceiling light has a motion detector when the car pulls into the port. I was hoping to avoid buying another motion detecting fixture and get by with brighter bulbs.

For the most part yes you can. Keep on mind the ratings are based on heat dissipation. We have been converting all kinds of fixtures over to led with no issues so far. This includes upping the output on some of of them quite a bit Led lights do make heat just less heat per lumen. Common sense plays a roll. Ymmv

Bigg ass could also be named expensive ass. Nice stuff I suppose but there are lots of options out there if $$ is a consideration.

I think you'd be better off with a different fixture but swapping bulbs could work. I did something similar but on a smaller scale for an interior fixture. Keep in mind LED buils arent cheap, a new/brighter fixture might be a wash. LED makes sense to me where the light is on a lot and/or it's hard to reach.

Some led and cfl lights don't play well with wet contact switches. Test how well the lights come on. If they flicker or are momentarily dim or off color during Starr up they might not last well.

You got me, again. Dont forget ranges, knives, wall ovens, entry steps...

It looks like $80-100 gets you an LED, outdoor motion light w/ ~2500 lumen, a bit brighter than you have now.

I have two lamps on posts on my porch. The lamps look like street lights with little roofs on them. When a bulb burnt in one, I replaced the incandescent with a similar brightness LED. When it snowed, the led lit lamp had a pile of snow on top. The remaining incandescent lit lamp had none. It was a a dramatic show of how much cooler the LEDs run.

Ed Hahn told me airports are having issues related to this because now led runway lights are not self cleaning snow off themselves.
