Default Roll Call! Karting Enduro, May 11

Mark your calendars: Monday, May 11 at All Sports Grand Prix in Sterling, VA.

This is our second-annual "bonus event" for the Winter Karting League, but we open it up to any friends and family who wish to participate.

Here's the email I just sent out, containing the details:
Quote:
This email will outline the plan of attack, including schedule, format, cost, and other logistics. It will not include the teams yet -- this will come next week, after registration closes. I plan to close registration on Wednesday (May 6) of next week, so sign up now if you haven't yet.

NOTE: we still are looking to fill out our 24 spots, so please spread the word quickly and encourage your friends and family to join us! The closer we get to the 24, the more fun the competition will be.

Timing and Location:
The event will be Monday, May 11. Mandatory drivers meeting at 6:30pm at All Sports Grand Prix in Sterling, VA (so, 15 minutes earlier than our standard time, for those of you in the league). Please arrive at least 15 minutes early, so as to give you time to (a) pay and (b) suit up.

I will have pizza and soft drinks (feel free to bring beer for afterwards) for consumption, starting around 5:45pm, so feel free to arrive earlier if you so desire.

Qualifying will begin at 6:50pm. Each driver will have a turn in a kart (see below), but each qualifying session will only last five minutes -- so get your fast laps in early and often (a lap is ~25 sec).

The race will begin once qualifying has finished.

After the race, there will be two awards ceremonies: an initial one for the Enduro itself (I'll probably weld up some trinkets for the "trophies" -- get excited) followed by the ceremony for the Winter Karting League, as this event also serves as our final event.

Cost:

Cost comes out to $90 per person, or $270 per kart. If you have committed to attending, please do not bail, as your teammates will find themselves having to cover your share of the kart.

Payment will be to ASGP directly when you get there that evening.

Teams:

As mentioned above, I'll be sending out the actual teams in a later email. Teams will be constructed randomly with three drivers per team. For the League participants we will try to have one driver from each weight class in each team. League drivers will be in separate teams from the non-League folks, though everyone will still be competing for the same trophies.

Qualifying Format:

Depending on our numbers, there will either be two or three qualifying sessions, allowing each driver to have a go on track. The qualifying position for a given team will be defined by the combined time of each driver on that team.

Race Format:

The race itself will be a 300-lap enduro, conducted nonstop until the fastest team finishes. There will be no need to refuel, as the karts can cover the entire race distance on one tank.

Driver changes, however, will be required. At a minimum, teams must change drivers every 50 laps (this is the honor system, so play along and don't be a jerk), though teams are also allowed to change drivers more frequently.

Additionally, each driver must have driven two stints by the end of the race (100 laps per driver).

Other than that, strategy is up to you and your teammates.

I will be covering flags and other safety rules during the Drivers Meeting. That said, please note that All Sports takes a very bleak outlook on kart-to-kart contact and will be reacting accordingly by black-flagging miscreants.

Equipment and Attire:

At a minimum, close-toed shoes are required. If you have very long hair, be sure to tie it back and secure it to your person somehow.

All Sports Grand Prix has driving suits, helmets, gloves, and balaclavas for everyone's (free) use, should you desire it, but drivers are also welcome to bring their own. If you do bring your own helmet, please note that it must be close-faced. It does not need to be Snell/DOT/FIA certified.

Feel free to bring a GoPro or other camera. It will need to be very securely mounted to your person, however.

C'mon people -- let's get some turnout! Currently at less than half what we need.

^ Looks like I forgot to include that -- added now.

Currently finalizing cost but last year's was $80 per person. Goal is to keep it around there, if not less.

If I'm not playing hockey at a tournament in Atlantic City that weekend, I may be up, and I'll check with some of them to see if they're interested. I should have a better idea by Saturday. What's your deadline?

Glad to hear your interest, the more the merrier. Saturday is fine -- I will be closing registration one week before the event (May 3ish).

Just close-toed shoes, at a minimum. While ASGP does have driving suits, helmets, gloves, and balaclavas you can use, you are welcome to bring your own. Helmets must be full-faced (but may be motorcycle or motorsports).
