Here’s a great chance to support the DC Central Kitchen and Martha’s Table, while enjoying an evening of top-notch drinks and/ or a first-class dinner.
The ‘Sips’ is held on the evening of January 24 at the Newseum, and features some of the top mixologists and artisan nibbles in the DC area. The ‘Suppers’ are hosted at various homes throughout the DC area on the evening of January 25, and the meals will be prepared by many of the best chefs in the area, and even some from other places (such as David Chang of NYC’s Momofuko and Milk Bar fame). Here’s the general info: http://www.sipsandsuppers.org/ And here’s a direct link to the EventBright tickets page: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2015-suppers-tickets-12051403071?team_reg_type=individual#lightbox_cont act Yeah, it’s not cheap, but it is tax-deductible, and since the chefs, servers, etc. are all volunteers and the food/ ingredients is donated that means the ticket money you spend is all going to wind up at DC Central Kitchen and Martha’s Table. And heck, most of you reading this own one or more Porsches, and probably a BMW, Audi, etc. as well, so the cost of a dinner is less then an new set of tires J Participating Artisans & Mixologists (‘Sips’ - January 24) •Amore Gelato •Aqua al 2 •Barrell •Borinquen Lunch Box •Catoctin Creek Distillery •CAVA •CAVA Mezze •DBGB •DC Central Kitchen •Dog Tag Bakery •Dolci Gelati •Don Ciccio & Figli •Early Mountain Vineyards •Fringetree •Firefly Farms •Ghibellina •Gordon Biersch •Gordy’s Pickle Jar •Gustafson Family Vineyard •Hank’s Oyster Bar •Hill Country BBQ •Jack Rose •Jaleo •Jardenea at Melrose Georgetown Hotel •JRINK Juicery •Mama Rouge •Martha’s Table •Met Bethesda •Pinea •Rappahannock River Oysters •Santa Lucia Coffee •Shake Shack •Shophouse •Singer’s Significant Meats •Sonoma •Sugar and Ice Candy Bar •The Sweet Lobby •Whistle Pig Rye •Willie’s Brew N Que •Zenful Bites Participating Chefs (‘Suppers’ (January 25) •Victor Albisu – Del Campo and Taco Bamba •Cathal Armstrong – Restaurant Eve •Matt Baker – City Perch Bethesda •Filippo Bartolotta – Le Baccanti •Kathleen Blake – Rusty Spoon (Orlando, Florida) •Elisabeth Bourgeois – Le Mas Tourteron (Gordes, France) •Amy Brandwein – Centrolina •Erik Bruner-Yang – Toki Underground •Jeff Buben – Vidalia •Jan Buhrman – The Kitchen Porch •David Chang – Momofuku •Peter Chang – Peter Chang (Richmond, Virginia) •Bertrand Chemel – 2941 •Tony Chittum – Iron Gate •Simone Cormier – Whole Foods International Spice Coordinator •Michael Costa – Zaytinya •David Dashaies – Central •Seth Bixby Daugherty – Real Food Initiatives •Teddy Diggs – Il Palio •Scott Drewno – The Source •Michael Friedman – Red Hen •Spike Gjerde – Woodberry Kitchen (Baltimore, Maryland) •Aaron Gottesman – Fat Ham (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) •David Guas – Bayou Bakery •Carla Hall – Carla Hall Petite Cookies •Melissa Hamilton – Canal House •Christopher Hirsheimer – Canal House •Susan Holt – CulinAerie •Joel Hough – Il Buco (New York, New York) •Mike Isabella – Graffiato •Peter Jacobson – French Laundry •Haidar Karoum – Proof and Estadio •Aglaia Kremezi – Cookbook writer from Greece •Ris Lacoste – Ris •Ryan LaRoche – Blue Duck Tavern/Park Hyatt Washington •David Lawrence – 1300 on Fillmore (San Francisco, California) •Francis Layrle – La Piquette •Jamie Leeds – Hank’s Oyster Bar •Alex Levin – Osteria Morini •Anthony Lombardo – The Hamilton •Tim Ma – Water & Wall •Harper McClure – Brabo Restaurant •Marjorie Meek-Bradley – Ripple •Kaz Okochi – Kaz Sushi Bistro and Masa 14 •Charles Phan – Slanted Door •Vickie Reh – Arrowine •Ed Scarpone – DGBG DC •Steven Satterfield – Miller Union •Lior Lev Secarz – La Boîte •Beatrice Segoni – Mama Florence •Nilesh Singhvi – Bombay Club •Nick Stefanelli •Adam Sobel – RN74, (San Francisco, California) •Michael Solomonov – Zahav (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) •Gina Stanley – Artcliff Diner (Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts) •Vikram Sunderam – Rasika •David Tanis – Chef & Acclaimed Author •K.N. Out of town then but looks great. I'll vouch for several - I note that Alice Waters (Chez Panisse) isn't spelled out as in Berkeley, Calif. Also great restaurants/chefs I've sampled there include Vidalia/Jeff Buben, 2941, Proof, Ris (Lacoste), Blue Duck, and Brabo (which DD should try, since it's local to him). Apparently Peter Jacobsen grows the food served at the French Laundry (wouldn't it be great if Thomas Keller were coming to DC!).

We go to Brabo Tasting Room occasionally -- it's a nice atmosphere. But we haven't made the plunge at Brabo yet. I suspect we'd try his place downtown first if we were going out for a $$$ dinner.
Alice Waters is one of the event founders (I suspect Jose Andres was probably the driving force, and he got others onboard); sadly tix for her dinner are $5k vs $600 for all the others. Don't be surprised if a Keller place opens in DC soon. I believe David Change will be here because he is looking to open a place downtown. And Peter Change is coming up from Central VA probably because he is working on opening a place around DC this year.

BUMP!
Some of the suppers are sold out now, but there are still tickets left for many. If you have ever eaten at Zaytinya, consider signing up for the supper where Chef Mike Costa is cooking -- you will not be disappointed. I just found out tonight I get to be a volunteer at one of the Suppers -- that should be a lot of fun. I hope to make Sips the night before.

Still openings at some of the dinners! Looks like I'll make it to the Sips on Saturday night if anyone else will be going.

Anyone participating next weekend in the 2016 edition? Pretty sure from posts in late '15 that Mike is no longer at ShopHouse, so I'm guessing he may not be at sips this year. I did not buy a Sips ticket for next Saturday anyway, but will be helping out at another Suppers. Same house that I worked at last year, but two different chefs. Should be a another fun experience!
