I have a friend down in VA Beach selling a 98 or 99 Boxster. A bunch of recent work, has a new top with glass rear window on it. Nice interior, all mechanicals gone through. I think he wants $8600 for it. Black on black.

I've attached the notes from the seller. It looks like he's done a lot of work. That's why he's asking 12k.

I don't want to overpay but I just want a great first Porsche.

Do you really want a boxter? This is the big question.

I would encourage you to be patient and drive as many cars as you can (you are welcome to come out and drive my 3.2 SC Coupe). The search is a lot of fun.

I went from a 95 coupe, to a 75 targa, to an 86 cab and finally got to what I wanted, which was an SC coupe (and also have a project coupe as well). they all have their unique qualities and different issues. but they are all fun to drive...so take the time to do that. as the prices of the air cooled 911's seem to be going up it may take some time to find one that meets your budget requirements, but it will come along...As this might be the one and only Porsche you buy...take your time and figure out what you want and then go after that model car...a few grand isn't going to make that much difference in the grand scheme of things...if you are buying a car that is going up in value...just my 2 cents..

I think you guys are right. I might be trying to talk myself into buying a Boxster but that's not what I really want. I really want a track ready 911 sc!

I'm a very impatient person and sometimes I get sidetracked. I do appreciate all the input and feedback you guys have given.

I'd love to learn more about the maintenance and care of these cars so if anyone needs some free help with their car please let me know!

All the best
Mike

The shop guys basically steered me clear., I went to RPM It was about a page long and after that I decided not to move ahead and do the leak down test on the engine. I liked the car but it's worth about 15k or less with the work that needs to be done and I didn't even have them look at the engine because the owner wasn't willing to negotiate on the price.

It's a shame because it is original owner but it was the owners son selling it and he just let it go to waste. He is trying to buy a house with the money and wants the max down payment.

You're doing the right thing to be patient. If you haven't found something by mid April ( yeah that's a long time to be looking but) I recommend going to the Hershey PA Porsche annual swap meet the third Saturday of that month. There are always plenty of cars for sale there and usually some good deals. Also, being there you will be in Porsche nirvana and will certainly see and learn things all about the cars you might otherwise ever have... If you have a car by then you will probably be looking for a part or two for it and there is more than plenty of that as well... Good luck with your search. If the SC is what you want then go for it. If it were me I would only get a coupe, esp if it will ever see the track...

The good news is that you already have a Ford Focus ST which is a well handling hot hatch that you would have loads of fun with on a track or autocross course.

Worst case, why not auto-x or track the Focus until the right car comes along.

You'll have fun, get your feet wet and in the process develop clearer sense for the type of track driving experience your looking for which will help solidify your car choice.

As folks have said in prior posts be patient. Not easy to do but you will be rewarded with a well sorted car.
