Look for some 997, or just general A/C expertise and ideas before going the professional route

Since owning my 2005 997, a/c has worked perfectly. Two weeks ago, I get in, click on the a/c, compressor kicks on, and something immediately sounds wrong. Noticeably louder noise than normal emanating from the dash area in general. In researching this, one person referred to it as a Darth Vader sound, which seems the best way to describe it. And of course, no cold air anymore.

I have seen some people say this could just be low freon with or without a substantial leak, but curious to see what you all think or have experienced
