I had my 88 928 over at Shenandoah, and as I came over to Main to grab some oil from OG I saw the red flag...then the black.
The quiet on the track and in the pits was very unsettling as folks didn't have any details, just knew that something serious had happened to a fellow driver. That's some dramatic footage you have there. I'm so relieved to hear that you're okay. |

Saw your car over at Euro Pros the other day when I went to speak to Derrick about my car. The flies were buzzing all around the impact area but I was happy to see the rest of the car held up well from the collision. Videos are sad but awesome at the same time and glad you walked away. Who knew deer could fly? Of note was your visor was up, perhaps a good lesson that we should keep it down while on the track....just in case.
Regarding the fence, it is not a bullet proof solution. There is a high fence to control deer and other wild life at Montgomery Airpark and they still have deer inside all the time along with mangy foxes and ground hogs. There have been airplane/deer strikes there over the years. The fence is routinely inspected and managed hunts are conducted to get rid of the deer once they are inside. So, if you are a terrorist and want to gain access simply disguise yourself as a whitetail and you are homefree. I hope SP didn't charge for the cleanup since they really should be responsible for keeping the deer out, or at least making an attempt. |

It was a tense moment seeing the red flag and EMS heading towards you. Very happy no one was injured except the deer.
To start with, how about clearing some trees inside and outside of T1-T2? Better visibility and less cover to attract deer?

+1. They just shelled out big bucks leveling the ground around Jeff, a track many fewer clubs will actually be using.
Leveling 15-20 yds of trees at T1 can't be THAT expensive.

I worked inside a fenced compound (RD&E) on Ft. Belvoir in the '80s. It had a ~12' fence all around it. Deer inside the compound were so tame you sometimes had to shoo them away from your car in the parking lot. I saw several clear the fence w/little difficulty if they thought the foliage on the other side looked greener. They had a different temperament in Oct/Nov though

I always wondered why they don't clear the entire infield at Turn 1-2. In addition to the safety benefits, it would also make for much better spectating from the "hill" at the control tower.

best way to reduce damage from deer is to thin the herd through sport hunting, particularly targeting does. if the herd cannot be thinned enough during regular season, WV DNR has a process for issuing wildlife damage permits allowing the taking of game animals out of season. worst thing you can do on a large tract of land in this regard is fail to hunt as this leads to over population of deer that will become a nuisance (including on adjacent parcels) due to lack of natural predators such as wolf and cougar.

Whoa. I have heard no injuries at all. Let's not start rumors and such.

Couldn't find footage of it, but Road America has pretty significant fencing around it the whole way around. Didn't stop a deer from taking out Cristiano da Matta in a Champ Car.
