Default While the engine and transmission are out...

A friend and I are going to swap out my 915 transmission for another one - for my 1984 Targa. I have been around most of one and part of another swap but they were years ago and I can't say I remember everything very well. I have the Bentley manual (in black and white) and my friend is a very good amateur mechanic - but doesn't have any experience with Porsches. So wish us luck!

We will be doing the work in a second garage behind his house and he suggested I do more homework to put together a list of things to do while the engine and transmission are out. We don't have a deadline.

Any suggestions?

Off the top of my head:

- Clutch
- Oil seals on the oil cooler and thermostat
- Cylinder head temp sender

While its out:

- replace the spark plugs
- do a valve adjustment
- check for any broken head studs
- inspect axles & cv boots, replace/rebuild as necessary
- inspect engine & transmission mounts, replace as necessary, or upgrade to wevo

It's quicker/easier to do all of these with engine out, so you might as well.

Since its a 915, you can also take the opportunity to upgrade to the brass shift coupling bushings.

ftfyb-o,
  • clean everything
  • shifter bushes (front and rear)
  • clean your oil level sender and top of the tank
  • replace rotor, cap and check wires
  • replace air filter
  • check your plug wires
  • fuel lines and rails
  • vacuum lines
  • if original consider changing clutch cable
  • little bushes in the throtle linkage (engine and trans linkages)

Bill Miller lives in Darnestown. Swapping transmission is a breeze for him. Perhaps you could contact him and ask for "advice" - he's great, and close.
