Four missed flags is too generous.

Regarding seeing flags, some things I do, and suggest/require the same with students:
- Make a point to look at every flag station on every lap, no exceptions. - Look directly at the flag station, don't just try to catch it in peripheral vision. That generally means choosing a specific point on the track to look at the flag station, with earlier usually being better. - Wave to flaggers whenever they display a flag, regardless of which flag it is. - At the end of each session, wave to all flaggers after the checker (to let them know the checker was seen, and to say thank you). I also emphasize to students that flaggers are there to help and are part of the team, not simply there to catch you doing wrong things; they can prevent wrecks and possibly even save your life. |

Great event. Mark had talked me into PFC08 and it was the first time out with the pads. All I can say is wow, way better the RS29's, really liked the bite and modulation.
I was also running a SoloDL for the first time. Plugged into the ODB2 port. On Friday car seemed to be running fine. Since it was cold in the morning, I left SC+TC on. During the first session, I never seemed to kick it on, and thought I must be really driving smooth. But there's a couple of places it comes on without much effort, like coming out of 6a. Early in the second session I was chasing Tuffy, and coming down the front straight the info display put up a see workshop message. I clicked the info level for the next screen and it was a message about the cornering lights not functional. Meh, who cares, I thought. But braking into turn one, the right rear tire locked up, it was like there was no ABS. Came in and plugged in my durameteric cable and the car was full of faults. After three passes of the clear faults in all modules function, the car had no faults. I left the SoloDL disconnected, and went out for the last session. This time SC+TC came on, and the car felt normal and no workshop messages. So I need to call AIM to see what they say, but obviously the SoloDL was messing with the network in the car. Durameteric cable paid for itself! Had Tuffy ride with me on Saturday. With his pointers I was able to drop 2 seconds. More to go, but it's a start.

I'm putting the info out there in case those with less experience (many of which read but don't post often) might benefit from it. Probably also worth noting that my ~20 past instructors have varied in which of these points they mention, and few (if any) have mentioned all of them. Not that I'm suggesting a 'uniform standard', but this list has worked well for me.

I'll admit I find humor in Irfan's post, as it sounds quite authoritative and 1) does not convey the fact that he is a new instructor at this point with only a few weekends under his belt instructing, and 2) he podiumed in the "running of the black flags" competition but makes no mention in his post about it, and how it resulted in him developing his list of things to do with student

My being a new instructor is well known in this forum, as is the black flag episode, which was discussed here back when it happened. And yes, that episode was an excellent learning experience for a driver doing his second DE weekend (haven't missed a flag or had any other problems since). |
