Default Sockets: Inches vs. MM

Is it alright to use an inches socket instead of a MM one? For example, can I use my 3/4" socket on the lug nuts for the wheel, instead of a 19MM? 3/4" converts to 19.05MM it and seems to fit just the same as the borrowed 19MM socket.

I'd say it depends on the application, the actual variance/tolerance between the measurements, the material of the fastener, and the torque at play.

Every bolt on your car is metric....why not simply buy a set of metric sockets and
never have to worry about a) doing the math to convert and b) rounding off a bolt?

I use a 19mm impact socket for my wheel lugs - it works with my impact wrench AND my torque wrench that I take to
the track. If I remember correctly, think I got the whole set of impact sockets at Harbor Freight (in multiple sizes) for less than $20.

Harbor Freight is your friend.

With Christmas coming you can get some great deals on Craftmans at Sears or better deals on Kobalts at Lowes or Husky at Home Depot, Each have a lifetime return if you break it. If you wait until after Christmas, you can get some really good deals on whatever is left at Lowes. I have done it many times. I just put them in with the track stuff.

I've got several sets of 19mm sockets, but I also have a 6-point 3/4" impact socket that came with an impact wrench years ago. It fits the lug nuts fine. If you have one, feel free to use it. I wouldn't, however, use "close" SAE sizes, esp. 12-point ones, for more critical work or where there's a significant chance of stripping a nut or bolt.

In the smaller sizes, its harder to find a match between SAE and Metric. But in the larger sizes, its easier. As long as the socket is a very close fit, especially with 6-point, it'll work fine. But as mentioned, close with a 12-point could lead to a rounded bolt head.

I was in Munich last year and saw a beautiful set of sockets in the tool department of a department store (yes, a department store!) The socket set along with other various auto tools were absolutely first class and VERY expensive, particularly given the conversion rate of the $$ to the EURO. Given the predominance of these tools in this store I got the impression that they were a rather common item, similar to Craftsman/Kobalt in the US. I've forgotten the brand name of the sockets sets I saw and was hoping someone here might be familiar with German brand tools and know the name. Thanks.

To add to DRs list:

Facom is prob one of the bigger Euro brands (~equiv to US Snap-On).

Off the top of my head there is also Wiha but there'ye mostly (excellent) screwdrivers and pliers. Dont know if they make wrenches/sockets.
