Crazy talk. Toss some tires on and come have fun. Don't quote me but I know of many a tire that has been pluged with no issues off or on track.

And per the plug-- according to the dealer, the nail I didn't know I had is in the side wall of one of the rear tires. It's my understanding that's something that can't (or shouldn't be) plugged. I don't know when I got the nail, but my tire pressure monitor has not indicated any leaks. Also, the dealer indicated I would fail the tech inspection even if the tire could be properly plugged (i.e. plugged tires would not pass tech inspection). -DJ |

Others know a lot more about tires than I do, but personally I wouldn't be comfortable with a plug in the side wall. I'd just replace the tire.
I've heard the comment about not tracking brand new tires, but have never heard a good justification for it. I've done it several times with no issues. But as Chris noted, start out slow and get a feel for the tires, track surface, etc. For a first DE, best advice I can offer is to follow the instructions of your instructor precisely and without delay. They know what works and what doesn't. Have fun and be safe! |

1) Does it leak when you press the nail this way and that? If yes, replace the tire (sidewall only - I'd plug a hole in the tread area)
2) Take it to Paul! I have a big cut on the sidewall of my tow vehicle - down to the steel cords - and Paul looked at it and told me it's fine, don't replace. I've since towed to both Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio with it and driven (without towing) to NY several times, no problems. 3) Plug in tread area would be unlikely to fail tech, esp. if Paul put it in. 4) Low but present tread shouldn't be a problem so long as the track is dry. 5) You really want to meet Paul anyway. Radial Tire is one of the great resources in this area!

Congrats with the decision to come to the track. Many years ago I started DE after having a number of AX events under my belt and don't think I have done an AX since.
Like everyone has said, go see or at least talk with Paul at Radial Tire for some solid advice. It would be better if you had more miles on the tires, but it won't be a problem since the first day will be spent learning the track and by the time you start speeding up your tires will have been run in and good to go.
