^ Are you signed up for the DE? Not that it matters but if you are your car will be on a lift anyway. But then sway bar replacements might be a bit much to accomplish during a tech. But there are alternatives such as the
Sportscar Shop, Inc. 45759 Elmwood Ct, Suite 150 Sterling, VA. 20166 Their business plan includes renting lifts for DIY projects. They also have tools available as well as other auto repair equipment. We had a tech there earlier in the season and their facility is very nice and well equipped. As a general rule DIY projects during PCAP Tech Sessions are dependent on lift availability and should be relatively simple with short durations and not require a lot of assistance. Obviously the priority has to be inspecting the DE participant’s cars. Remember we don’t make appointments and the queue can vary throughout the tech (9AM – 2PM). In the past a lot of folk have bundled their DIY projects (i.e. change oil, trans fluid, brake pads) so that if needed they can be interrupted if the DE queue gets to long and we need a lift. That said we might be able to accommodate you. So if you are ok with possibly not being able to get a lift for your DIY come on by. It’s a good opportunity to meet some enthusiasts and check out some nice track/street cars!

Ardy,
Hi. Do you know the extent of the project on a Boxster? If it's a 2-3 hour job you might want to consider Sports Car Club anyway because you don't want to be half-way through, have something go wrong, and run out to time... On my car, changing the rear sway bar and drop links is <1 hour, but changing the front would be much longer. Peter

@David: unfortunately I am not going to Watkins, and I don't want to disrupt the tech session. Probably I should clarify my question - that I would like to exclusively borrow/rent the lift for that 2-4 hour job at the same time when the DE inspection is happening.... I thought it would be fun to do it among friends and experts. Your rcommendation about SportsCar Shop is a good idea. I will reach out to them.
@Dr K: I anticipate about 2-4 hours so yes, SportscarShop will be a better option. @Ken: I was in Shanghai, "hitting" a sea of people in the Yu Garden and the crowded Line 2 Subway instead of cones. Sorry I miss the fun, but I am planning to return on session# 2. Are we still on for the battle of the peppers?

Ardy: This is no lift rental at Tech sessions. In the past there have been some Lifts for Carity events than an concurrently with the tech sessions, but that is not the case this season.
For an extended project such as yours, Sportscar Shop is a great option. Another is the tech session at Porsche of Tyson's Corner, as there are usually several lifts available for DIY work. But as always, DIY lifts are first-come first-served (i.e., no reservations), and you need to arrive with all the tools you need, and be prepared to get the job completed by 2:00 pm.

Ardy,
Sorry but the battle of the peppers will have to wait one more month, other plans crept up. My suggestion is go do it anyway and I'll catch up with you in July. In the meantime consider this: Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

I'm hoping to do my first DE in August, but I would like to get a Tech Inspection now just to see if there is anything I need to get done in preparation. I know the PCA Potomac website says anyone can show up and have a Tech Inspection, but I'd rather not hold folks up who actually need a Tech Inspection for the next event. Is there a better time than another to show-up? Thanks in advance!
FROM PCA Potomac Website: All tech sessions are open to all PCA club members and individuals from other marquee clubs with approved vehicles. Even if you are not driving in a DE event you are encouraged to come out and meet fellow club members. If you have a new, or new to you, Porsche bring it along. You can have a knowledgeable tech inspector put your car on a lift and look it over and answer any (well, almost any) questions you might have about the care and maintenance of your car. All pre-event tech inspections start at 9:00 AM and end at 2:00 PM. If anyone arrives after 1:30 PM for a tech inspection there will be a $20.00 charity charge. |

[note - not even a tech inspector anymore, but I believe this is accurate] Come pretty early, and plan to stay for a couple of hours. You will want to see all the wear issues with other similar cars (what do you drive? - unless it's a CarreraGT or a purpose-built early race car like a 904 (drool), there will likely be others like it). You will learn A LOT for the time you spend. Whatever you do, don't come late in the session.
Also, why not introduce yourself here. We generally like first names and photos of your car. Peter
