Last time I posted on ignition coil problems, Matt de Maria replied to the effect that Bosch coils are unreliable. After burning out another one (a Bosch unit marked up by a Porsche shop three times what most on-line suppliers charge because it was a "genuine Porsche part"), I checked at Pep Boys, which had a Borg Warner coil available for my 1982 SC for $185. This was news to me; I thought Bosch was the only show in town. I ordered one, and will see if it works in about five days. Meanwhile, keeping fingers crossed and wondering if anyone has experience with a BW coil?

No direct experience with Borg Warner's in a 911 but dont see why it wouldnt work. I recently put a ~$135 'Standard Intermotor' in a car, so good so far. I've had a few issues with Mexican made coils, although I have but a fraction of Matt's experience.

Not directly on point, but I remember that the '77 used a coil that was "paired" with the permatune CD box that came from Porsche. When people used a different coil they would burn up in no time.
Not sure what CD box the '82 has or whether it suffered from the same "pairing" issue. Marc

Well, the "Borg Warner" coil I ordered from PepBoys came in a Borg Warner box ... but was an old familiar Bosch coil. The folks at PepBoys were perplexed but promptly refunded my $185.
