I'm planning to have a custom roll bar installed in my '93 964 C2, so need some general advice. For example, where should the feet of the main hoop be located? Same question for the rear tubes? What materials of construction are available and what are the advantages / disadvantages of each? Does an " X " brace between the rear tubes add significantly to safety or stiffness? Thanks.

Look in this thread for some pictures. Do not go crazy with the cage. See if you can find picture of the cage in the 964 cup cars on the internet (renlist). I think that they only had one diagnol. Unless the cage is tied to the suspension, stifness is minimal. http://dorkiphus.net/porsche/showthread.php?t=24566 Antonio's is a cage, but you'll get the picture. Good luck. Once you weld something in, there is no going back. Start looking for trailer and tow vehicle. Off Topic - Have not had a chance to take any pictures. Hopefully this weekend.

Don't rush it. If you have 3 weeks, go to the Club Race at Summit Point Oct 1, and look at the cages in the cars. Not too far from Richmond. Or look at the cage in Bob M's (chief instructor) car, and copy the roll bar portion. I've been won over to the kicked-out X for door bars, but I heard you that you only want a bar at this point. Make CERTAIN that the installer designs the roll bar to be converted eventually to a cage - it's a slippery slope.

Since i don't know the car.. Coupe, Targa or Cab?
I'd also consider consulting the PCA Club Race, NASA or SCCA rulebooks about materials, thickness and general mounting point locations. Ideally, as Peter suggested, taking in a PCA Club race would be an excellent way to get close to similar cars and inspect they type of equipment you are considering.

Thanks for the comments. I will consult the rule books and maybe I can get Bob M to send me some pictures of the Cup installation. Like Bob's, my car is a Coupe.

Roll Bar or full cage? Cage is necessary for club race, but not DE; if you really mean Roll Bar, then go with something like the DASport bolt-in unit.

X3. Roll bar is adequate for DE. If you ever decide to race the car, strip the interior and go to a custom cage.

if you are doing just a bar, i'd either go with a bolt in as mentioned or get something that conforms to SCCA/NASA/PCA regulations in case you ever go full tilt and do the whole thing.
bolt in is super easy and probably your best option here. if you are truly going custom (I read that as welded in) then I'd want to strip down the interior a bit. otherwise, you'll have something that is compromised for starting with when you decide to do the full thing. also, a welded in bar with carpet and what not will make it very difficult to remove the carpet when you go to the next step. another advantage of the bar is that you can return it to stock if you decide you want to sell. which is really what you should do even if you want to go racing as buying someone's built racecar is generally cheaper than building your own.
