I had always read about earthquakes but never felt one. I was sitting at my desk on the 5th floor downtown and felt the first bit. It felt a little odd. So I'm like "OK, that's what an earthquake is supposed to feel like". I had read they were short. Then it starts up again and more violently. I don't recall if it made any noise but it seemed like it went on forever. I have this massive wood government issue desk. I briefly thought "how long would this desk hold up with the other 2 floors piled on top of it".
Then I heard people in the other offices yelling and stuff. I grabbed my keys, phone and jacket and out the door.

Now let me get this straight:
The epicenter was 2 miles from Cuckoo
and 12 miles from Bumpass
just off State Rt. 677
A new tourist attraction is born!

Kinda glad it wasn't worse, the SC was up on the mid-rise, could have been bad.

I was on the 7th floor in Bethesda. The first vibration felt like a backhoe hit the building. The second one actually shook my computer monitor and desktop...... I was down the stairwell in minutes since a high rise masonry building doesn't bend well. My son sent me a text from Newport News telling me that his dorm room was shaking. Freaky being 4 hours away. My youngest son at home in Loudoun called to tell me that everything on the shelves was shaking. When I finally got home for the evening, I noticed about 10 or so pots on shelves just waiting for one more aftershock to give up the goods.

So did anyone have any damage to their houses? I haven't heard from my tenants, but I can't imagine the matchbox-strength build quality of DC-area condos was any match for an earthquake.

From FARK: "5.9 earthquake hits DC area. East coasters panic, west coasters seen laughing hysterically." Just about right. We don't even go outside for a 5.9.
