FWIW, I talked to the Optima guy at a trade show last year. His advice was to use Yellow Top for race car applications where the car would sit for long periods [long compared to a street car] between uses.
Also, don't use a standard lead-acid style battert charger on these or other similar batteries. Buy one of the CETEC smart chargers, and use the * setting.

X2, I e-mailed them right after buying 2 with Dave's coupon and they said the same thing. However they also said a regular charger set at the lowest (2 amps or less) would work. Charge times are a lot longer though. Usually 2 or 3 hours or more.

Which one should I get for the 1985 911 a "25" or "35" Looks like +/- post orientationis the only difference. Either perhaps because the space is so big for the existing battery it would allow one to rotate the battery to suit the cable lengths?

Will the Porsche Techquipment cigarette lighter charger that gives you a choice of either car or motorcycle work on the yellow top? Correct me if I'm wrong but Optima batteries are dry mat technology as opposed to wet acid right?

Yes. And IIRC, the Yellow Tops are deep cycle, which may affect some chargers, too.

If you mean to charge then prolly. But it would take longer. Optimas don't seem to respond well to hot shoots. And when discarged won't recharge as fast as wet cells.

Are there any weight savings with the yellow Optima over standard wet cells? I remember putting in my current battery and it was quite heavy. I know Braile batteries are much lighter and smaller but not sure if they would be as dependable as an Optima.
The Techquipment charger I have is made by CETEC but not sure if it fits the criteria that Tony K mentions above. Anyone know what he means by the * setting? Last edited by Landjet; 05-11-2011 at 07:33 AM. |

Another thing I like about the dry cells is that they create less of a mess in the event of an accident/incident; something to think about in a race car. Including getting upside down.
