While the water-cooled cars (1998-2002 or so) are the best value in terms of power/$$ and modern suspension, there's a certain feel to the older cars. Are you looking to drive your car on the track? That will change your choice.
Hi Peter, great questions. I'm not looking for a track car (never been to the track, so I don't know what I've been missing!). My preference (based solely on lust) is a 911. However, I'm kind of tall (6'3"), and realize that my ultimate choice may be determined by how well I fit. If I can't get comfortable in a 911 then I'll start looking at something like a 968 or 944. My plan is to start trying out some older (80's?) and newer (02-05) 911s and go from there.

Your height is no problem. I'm 6'. 5-1/2 inches. Unless you're all torso, you'll fit in a sunroof coupe (but might be tight with a helmet on if you decide to go to the track). Aftermarket seats, especially track seats, can give you 2" of extra headroom (the Porsche "sport seats" add maybe 1"). Removing the sunroof or finding a non-sunroof coupe adds 2" of headroom.

Targas and cabriolets have more headroom than a sunroof coupe, but are less stiff, heavier, and can leak. I have a Targa (which doesn't leak) but am moving to a coupe since I drive the P-car almost exclusively on the track now and have started racing (well, I call it racing - those I race against call it "losing").

Your height *IS* a problem. Im only 6'2" (and not all torso, 36" inseam) and in a sunroof SC my head touches the rear sunroof seam. Every time you hit a bridge seam you end up w/ a bruise on your head. Race seats really help, but removing the sunroof was the right answer (but its a track car and A LOT of work.) If you're tall, find a non-sr coupe. Yes, they're harder to find (and more desireable) but you'll thank yourself.

And I actually beat 2 "E class" cars in my most recent race...

And Tony, I don't remember holding you up at all. Maybe it was just a dream, but didn't I pass you?

I'm not good with video, but will have to dig up some of the earliest sessions from my Oct 2010 Club Race weekend stuff. I'll post something in a separate thread to avoid derailing this one any further.

Hi all. New to your community. I've met a few of you from some PCA events that I've attended. I don't own a Porsche, but have a few buddies on here that do DEs and race with Nasa. Figured I'd join and partake of some of the track discussions. I drive an Audi A4 as my daily and race an E36 BMW M3 in Nasa in GTS2.
