Is the OE muffler on my '88 stainless? It was completely rusted, but it turned out to be a very thin layer of surface rust. I took a wire wheel to it and now it looks new. I was going to paint it, but if its stainless I might keep it as is.
Also, are the heat exchangers stainless as well. I'm amazed how solid the metal is on my exhaust system after 20+ years.

How magnetic is the metal? Stainless is only slightly attractive to even strong magnets.

It's magnetic, but not as magnetic as say my welding table. That's what led me to believe that it might be stainless.

Stainless Steel exhaust will not rust in the first place, you may have polished it and the mix in the steel may not be the same has your welding table witch explain the fact that it is less magnetic

I don't think OEM is stainless.
