Default Hmmm... Considering building my engine to be more exciting...(914 content)

I have been spending a lot of time recently with the 914. Car handles like a dream... runs fairly well and all in all is an enjoyable car.

I have 2 primary concerns with this car.

1. Leaks oil like crazy...

2. It is almost a slow as a 1.6L Civic LX(ask me how I know).

Through the research that I have done everyone says "buy a jake raby engine"...

Alright, that aint gonna work. I cant seem to get any straight answers out of anyone as far as parts used/and specific pricing... But from what i hear, a kit runs 6k+ for parts.

Anyone that has rebuilt one of these car to make some decent power ~120whp, could you chime in, or point me to someone that has insight? Would like to purchase the parts from a local shop and give as much of my business to locals as possible... however I want to do the build myself, this fall.

Will end up with running dual weber '44s.

Thoughts? Insight?

FWIW, Charlie Murphy at Intersport has extensive and long-lived history with lots of P-car configurations. Not sure exactly how much he knows about 914's, but I think a conversation with him would be worthwhile.

Ray at ASG also knows 914's. He used to race his own. There's a guy in the Potomac PCA who comes to DE's with a completely re-worked 914 with twin turbos. Beautiful car and fast. Mike[94teener] probably knows him.

He was VW guy, but Gene Berg built some extremely sick type I and IV motors. There is still a site dedicated to him. Do some research. I saw one of his 3.0 type I drag motors. Beyond belief. It put out well north of 300hp. (OK so its life was measured in hours not miles, but also not in 1/4 miles)

John Deford. Motor isn't that great, only puts out about 500hp
