I've had great experience with ASG, although their alignments are pricey and they're backed up as usual...into August at this time.
Can anyone recommend a good alignment shop that knows Porsches (ie, doesn't scratch up wheels, understands that we can feel it when the car is off, and has the high attention to detail that we ask for)?? I have a new set of Fikses going on at the end of this week at Radial tire. On Wed next week, I have an appt with Dulles Motorsport, but they charge $200 (still too much $$ IMO). I won't go to Porsche Pitstop or Intersport.

Josh,
Try Autobahn in Fairfax. They were recommended to me a while ago for suspension/alignments. I called ASG yesterday to CC my heads, and like you said, would take them 2 weeks to get to even get to them. I then called Autobahn they said they could get them back to me by Wed. Their shop is immaculate, cars not being worked on were under cover and Jose (owner) gave me walk around the shop to show me a 3.0 he was building. Obviously very meticulous by they way he kept shop.

Josh, I'm probabyl taking my 993 to RPM in Newington when I need an alignment. Although Porsches are their bread and butter, they also have a tire business.

Josh:
FWIW: I take my 911 to Dulles for alignments and tire mounting, but I don't have Fiskes. They did my car before the June DE and it never handled better. They will ask you for input as to how you like the car to feel . . . . from twitchy to sluggish. They also do work on my other german cars and I have been very satisfied with the work. Are they cheap . . . . nope, but they stand behind the work, and they know their stuff. Check out the 930 motor they are rebuilding if you go by.

Count me as another satisified Dulles customer. Granted I only had the front aligned (either $80 or $100 - can't remember right now) but I will definately use them again when the time comes for another alignment.
BTW, how much were you hoping to pay for an alignment?

I'll give Autobahn a call, but for now it looks like I'm headed to Dulles next Wednesday. They charge $100 for each end of the car. So $200 total. ASG charged me $210 last time I had my '87 aligned. They now charge $230-ish (3 hours of mechanic's time). Does it truly take 3 hours to align our cars properly? Maybe if the alignment is really screwed up and they're doing a corner balance at the same time, IMO. But I think it's more likely a 1.5 hour job, if even that. So $150 should do it.
I have the spec sheet from my last alignment at ASG. I'll have Dulles start from there, and possibly suggest some changes to that setup. Thanks all for the advice.

Tell either Dave at Dulles that you know me and they may charge you double.

Like all things quality; you pay for what you get. I'm an experienced tech and in order to properly align the car there is a set procedure that a good alignment tech does. My shop charges @$240. for a 4-wheel align and additional time for special, antique or custom vehicles.
1) Initial test drive for customer complaint and feel 2) Rack the car and check for any wheel/tire problems 3) Check steering and suspension thoroughly 4) Check /correct tire pressure 5) Check ride height; side to side/front to back 6) Adjust ride height if possible 7) Set alignment equipment up and take first readings 8) Make camber /toe adjustments to the rear first 9) Make camber/caster adjustments 10) Jounce car and allow it to settle, re-check readings 11) Center steering wheel and set toe-in 12) Test drive / verify 13) If the car does not drive right, repeat process starting at step 7 |
