Only 50K euros more than the CGT? Seems like a bargain. Heck, GT2s are close to $250K cars, OTD, iirc. Loaded up Panamera Turbos are easily $150K. $600K US sounds about right. It is a rarified club afterall, these "supercars".

Porsche lost money building 959s.. then they nearly went banktrupt. Maybe they've learned under Weideking to charge more for the car than it actually cost to build.

Fritz is right. Its the hundreds of thousands of engineering manhours to develop the car/technology. Im sure the PRICE of the car itself covers the COST of assembling the car (probably w/ some profit).

Long term investment for sure. Hopefully they will use this new tech for a long time.

A few months ago I saw a special on the design and construction of the Veyron (I think it was one of those 'Fabulous Factories' or somesuch on Discovery). Considering much of the car is based on aerospace and F1 design and construction methods, I'm not surprised it sells at a loss. That's a lot of design/engineering cost to amortize over a very few units. Just the wind tunnel testing costs probably account for >$100k per vehicle.

I'd surmise the 918 is priced right about break-even for Porsche, but they'll do it not only for the image (gotta have periodic supercars to retain status) but as a test-bed of advanced technologies which can be replicated later in other models.

I forget how much Bugatti looses on the Veyron but I think it approaches 1 mil per car.

Since you're familiar with what the material and labor costs actually are to assemble a Veyron, do you mind sharing with the rest of the class?

Good point, Larry. I'm going to go out and get myself some metal and some carbon fiber and whatever other raw materials I might need to build myself a Veyron and try it out. I'm sure I can do it for way less than $1M. Who's with me?

I accept that developmental costs are high but the material costs are not so much. I heard the tires are $25,000 a set. Ridiculous, it's a gob of rubber and some belts.
