The top middle one looks like a discharge into the ground?

That's a hazard I hadn't thought of before. I honestly don't understand why anyone would be against windmills in their back yard/shore. I think they look rather peaceful, and I would expect them to be pretty quiet too. I don't see the downside of it at all.

I'm with Ken. As an ardent environmentalist, it doesn't bother me to see those huge turbines in Pennsylvania or the fields of smaller windmills on Route 10 just west of Palm Springs. And I, too, find the large ones very peaceful.

They are pretty if there is one. But they are huge and often there are 100 visible at a time in areas of the midwaste and California. Also, as you may imagine, they are quite dependent on wind which fluctuates a lot. They require brakes when it's too windy, and don't do anything when there isn't enough. The better alternative is hydro turbine mills. Underwater "wind" mills run at a very consistent speed almost constantly if placed in the right area. I think they also produce more power per revolution due to water being just a bit thicker than air. There are projects underway in the Hudson and several other areas.

I have no doubt the hydro turbines would be more efficient, probably less risky (not prone to fires or falling over?) and of course no one can complain their unsightly if they're unseen.
