larry, when you start out with a super fast well set up exotic car, one that has capabilities and potential that many of the best drivers here wouldn't max out, and as a white student you start a thread essentially saying it's not quite right for you and you need to make some high-end mods to improve it, it's probably predictable that folks here with a lot more experience, many of whom are instructors, are going to try to give the most obvious helpful advice, which is the best possible improvement is seat time, really getting to know your already capable car. it's not untrue that you can learn a lot in incapable cars because they actually force you to learn just to stay on the track. the condescension and the attitude is just internet window dressing, it's a porsche board after all so is expected. it's just razzin', not hatin', and it all goes away when you laugh at yourself and listen to what they're saying. there's a lot of good advice in this thread. when a thread reaches ten pages it should maybe qualify as a successful thread, but often in order to be successful a thread must be entertaining. the so-called condescension just makes it more entertaining and keeps folks interested and reading, and posting the helpful comments. Dr K gets far more shit here than you or possibly anyone else. but it never bothers him. ok maybe he likes shit more than the average person, but his threads are entertaining and often successful for all concerned.

Thanks Cliff, I intend to re-read everything to see what I may be missing.
You know, I went to high school with people who had this condescending attitude and I didn't think it was cool then and don't think it's cool now. Humor is one thing, smugness is completely different. This is some kind of east coast thing, didn't really encounter it while living for 15 years in California and I guess I had thought maybe people would grow up and evolve out of it from their high school days. Wrong again. There are better ways to communicate with your fellow man. Ever since my scuffle with Harlequin I pretty much let it roll off my back. Sometimes it surprises me though. |

Interesting take on things... I saw it evolve as people trying to give you advice, and you continually rejecting it. I even remember reading a few times where people requested you provide a more thorough description of the instability you were feeling so they could help you out better. And also a recommendation to go over this face-to-face, as it facilitates a quicker and much more thorough exchange of information.
So there was a lot of frustration all around. And definitely not the way it would work if we were all face-to-face.

Larry,
Can I ask a question here. Your car was upgraded recently by TPC? Can you share what shocks you are using and their settings? Also what spring rate front and rear? My experiences on the 996 platform in adjusting sway bars is a bit different than what you are describing. Curious how the springs and shock settings come into play.

Geoff at ASG does the work on my car not TPC. Anyway, my car has a 450/700 spring set with Moton 2 way adjustable shocks. Motons have 7 settings total. They told me to set them on #3 comp F, #4 rebound F, #4 comp R, and #5 rebound R, and that is what I have been using. I was told by the Moton guys that 600/800 or 700/900 was a better spring choice for my car, but the 450/700 is what came with my set up when I bought them. Not knowing any better I just used them. But this is why I asked about springs because the experts say stiffer for the track. All the control arms were replaced to facilitate getting more camber for the track. Geoff did the alignment and corner balance. The sway bars were bought from TPC, and one of the confusing things about Mike's set up is he is the opposite from what I've read on other sites for my turbo's set up. Mike wants the bars stiffer in front and other places they want them stiffer in the rear. I have them both in the middle.
Does that help? |

Let me try and explain the handling characteristics I'd like to improve and maybe Kurt, who has 2 way shocks, or some someone else with them could chime in.
In the T3 braking zone just before turn in, there are some pavement undulations that were unsettling with just the driver but much smoother with a passenger. What shock adjustment would smooth that out with just the driver in the car? Also the entry to T4 has similar undulations I'd like to smooth out. |

Soften high speed compression damping might be one thing. If no adjustment for just high speed take a click out of compression. less weight leads me to think too much resistance to compression but we are talking fine hairs. The real world of what is going on might be something else altogether than an internet conversation.
Me? I look at the overall handling other than one corner. Tuning for one corner can cause you to loose tune in other possibly higher importance corners. ie, don't tune turn in on T5 tune it on T10. Tuning is a factor of car and driver. Micro adjustment in driving is tuning.
