at least according to the Commonwealth of VA. My 1990 C2 Targa has failed emissions for NOx and HC so I'm planning to replcace my aged catalytic converter.
Please share any advice or experiences with the aftermarket performance cats (e.g., GHL, Bosal, Dansk 100-cell, etc.). Not sure if I should go with an expensive factory unit or after market - I want to be sure to pass emissions test without sacrificing, and possibly improving, performance. Thank you, Scott |

Not knowing any history etc, but have you done the plugs, airfilter etc. Old fashioned tune up goes a long way to cure halitosis.

Test with cat hot. I always drive to the station via the long way to and in a lower gear to warm cat. Then let run while waiting. Also oil change helps. Got a generic form ??? when I got one for the SC. PO didn’t have one and after 2 emission cycles had to pony up. If replacement is in spec it shouldn’t matter where you got it except for longevity.

Plugs and tune up were performed about 10k miles ago - along with cleaning K&N air filter. There is a rattling sound coming from the cat - I imagine it is cracked or shattered.

Hi Scott,
I have a spare complete set of 964 exhaust including cat, both mufflers, and both heat exhangers. If you need to pass the test for now and upgrading the cat later, I can lend you mine spare cat and go to get tested. I live in Ashburn VA. Andy

Way Cool Andy!
BTW I have a gasket for a 964 exhaust you can have, it came with a valve adjustment kit.

Isn't this place great?
How about you take someone else's 964 to inspection and hand them YOUR registration card? Better yet, borrow someone's 964 C4, use your car's regis. card and you'll suddenly become exempt.

Thnak you Andy and CMartin for your very kind offers - this is an excellent forum and very valuable resource. I think I want to try an after market cat and hopefully be done with the issue for another decade or so. I'm leaning towards a GHL 400 cell cat - price is $475 - factory cat is $1000+. Is anyone familiar with the GHL product?

My apologies to RL and the Dorkies,
I didn't mean to offend anyone or put this forum in jeopardy with the law by offering Scott the cat (is that illegal?). What if Scott decided that he needs to pass the test tomorrow so that he can used his 964 to get to and from work?, and that he could not make up his mind as to which cat upgrade he needs?. Would it be illegal for Scott to buy a used cat and runs it untill he decide which cat upgrade to go with?. Maybe?, I don't know. I just want to help a fellow Dorki out for a couples of weeks (I have never meet Scott before, but if he likes Porsches and enjoy pissing all his money into modding it, he is fine by me) .
