The news of the fatal accident really shook me up yesterday. But it reminded me of my appreciation for the great instructors I've had and their willingness to teach.

Does anyone know if the '09 award was announced?

What fatal accident...?!!!!!! (fail for serious open-ended comment)

As far as I know the award was to be presented at the DE dinner that had to be postponed due to snow; rescheduled for 3/20.

I am purposefully not talking about that one around here at home.

I know it was a freak accident and doesn't change my attitude towards instructing but sobering nonetheless.

No amount of personal safety gear (short of body armor), car safety gear/prep would have prevented/lessened the outcome.

RIP

Damn, that is horrible. I hope the incident is reviewed and the details are shared so we can all understand the causes. Condolences to family and friends.

That is horrible. Tom ran with Potomac at VIR last September and was in the garage next to Tuffy and me (he had a GT2). Really nice guy.

Some luck lies not in getting what you thought you wanted but getting what you have, which once you have got it you may be smart enough to see is what you would have wanted had you known.

That's terrible. I had Tom as an instructor at VIR a couple of years ago. He was a nice guy and I learned a lot from him. My condolences to the family.

Short story is that his student's car slipped on some antifreeze and went off into the woods. Tree intruded into cockpit.

Damn. I had a student hit antifreeze entering t4 at Summit as I was trying to say "Slow down Anti-freeze!" I had JUST put 2 and 2 together from a little wiggle in 3, but there was not enough time to warn and him to react before we were spinning track right down the hill. I only mention this because the only hope of reducing antifreeze related wrecks is for everyone to LOOK for clues. It is hard to see, but frequently can be smelled. If you smell antifreeze, worry about it! Even if your car is air cooled, worry about the smell of antifreeze!

One club asks drivers to turn on their hazard lights if they feel antifreeze. Maybe this should become the norm.
