Is that the new "short wheelbase" van?

My Dad was a Doctor. He would never permit me to have even so much as a Cushman Scooter. "Seen too many results of motorcycles in the emergency room!" I believed him. My brother did not. He was killed the day before his 40th birthday in a solo accident that broke his neck and my Mothers heart. Dad did not live to experience the pain of losing a child.

Based on the speeds of the other vehicles, plus a woman pushing a stroller on the sidewalk, that's probably a neighborhood. Obviously the car failed to yield when making that left turn, but that biker looks like he's going WAY above the speed limit.

FWIW, I can't imagine NOT riding motorcycles. I love the experience. The only thing better (that one can do solo) is flying a plane. Motorcycles may not be safe, but riding defensively and not riding in heavily congested areas or times helps. Just wish there was a way to make US drivers more cognisent of our existence. In europe I consider it safe, but then again, the asshole driver ratio in Europe isn't nearly as high as it is here.

I imagine most people scan the oncoming lane to a distance that that they think will include any traffic that might be a problem when they make the turn. Assume the motorcyle is going 75 in a 25 zone, and he'd be a factor 2-3 times farther away than you'd expect. The car driver probably wasn't looking far enough down the road to see him.

Just recently, I was making a left turn on a road with a 40mph limit. Two cars coming at me in the opposite lane were far away, and I thought nothing about making the left turn in front of them. Well it turns out those two cars were either racing or playing around and both were doing an estimated 80+ mph. I went full throttle with the minivan when I realized what was happening, but with front wheel drive and no limited slip, I just got a bunch of tire squeal from the inside drive wheel. We narrowly escaped that one.

When cars are a reasonable distance away and coming directly at you, it's very hard to judge their speed. The car in that video made the commitment to turn left when the motorcycle was a far distance away.

A similar scenario supposedly played out long ago, in a land far, far away.......involving a 550 Spyder.

That clip reminds me how my '76 911 got tagged ... guy just turned left in front of me as I was doing 35 mph in the zone. Says he didn't see me ... from behind the car in front of him waiting to turn left across my path ... just took a left in front of me...

~$10K later in PD and "but for the grace of God go I ..." here we are.

Looks like his head/helmet ended up under the rear wheel.
