I'm trying to get additional information on my '68, but haven't had any success finding sites on the web that have data going back to the 1960's. An 8-digit VIN seems ancient history, but the info on where the car was purchased, etc, should be available somewhere... correct?
Anyone have any knowledge on looking for data on these early cars? |

Nope. Best you can do is a CoA from porsche. That'll have the orig options but thats about it.

I have the CoA, but what I was hoping to find was info on the dealer who sold the car when new, as well as any other data concerning the car that has been collected over the years.

Sounds like a fun project!
CarFax is probably going to have the most consolidated source of information, provided the car has been registered. Though I don't know how far back their data actually goes. Other than that, local PCA dealers may be able to retrieve data available via PCNA's national database, but again, don't know if there's a date limit. You may want to put together an "online flyer" with VIN, pics, and whatever else you may know, and post on various P-car sites (Rennlist, Pelican, etc.) to see if any boarders may have info. Good luck!

Unless the car came with some assemblance of paperwork, you will be out of luck. (my '76 914 still has the original owners manual and a few dealer service stamps!)That's why cars "with paperwork" always carry a premium to the collector group. You could do some search requests on all the various Porsche boards about your request for info based on the VIN number. May be hard to track down 40+ years of information.. dead previous owners, out of business dealers etc.

Thanks to all for your words of advice. I do have some of the paperwork covering a rebuild back in the '90's, and the names of two previous owners. I'll talk to our dealer here and see what they can tell me, and try querying CarFax. Who knows - maybe I'll get lucky!
