Or try something with no fenders or doors, you can buy a nice Formula Ford with spares and a trailer for under $10k, rebuilds are inexpensive $3-6k by a pro. I was just at the 40th anniversery race at Road America, had over 100 starters and was a lot of fun. You can also race almost every weekend if you want with many double race weekends. There are a lot of options for fun, you just need to find the one that suits you best.

Shoot we should start a pole to see who could bring in the most by leaving

Thanks guys, interesting opinions. I guess I didn't realize that "Stock" wasn't even close. I don't think that there's much 944Spec out this side of the country....it's a true "spec" format..they make you use Ra-1s. The 944 cup is (or can be) a lot more spendy and full of variations. I think that 944 cup with the S2 would put me into supercup, but I'm not sure. I think my old car would have been better for conversion to full racer.

Given that our stock is nothing close, are there car clubs with a stock class any more?

Steve,
944S2 would be in 944SuperCup, and could be competitive. Lots more turbos in the class, but S2 have also done well.

FWIW, building a race car is a P$I$A. Much better/easier to find a built racer and go from there. Plus, the cost will likely be much less; nobody every recovers 100% of their build cost in a race car. Dave Derecola always has lots of good leads on available race cars. Check things out on the 944Cup forum.

Research the classes you want to run in and find out what the most competitive car is and buy that.

In a perfect world that's what you wold do.

When I was shopping Bob Miller told me to buy a Euro SC. We found a street car but it would have cost to much. I bought Bruce Dobb's very well prepared track car.

Alas, I still have pumped more money that I want to think about into what I thought was a car I could go race. In theory that was true but I've added:

Nascar bars
Sway bar mounts
Elephant Racing bushings
2 sets of wheels
There are $2500 worth of tires in my garage at all times
Wevo engine mounts
30mm rear t bar
New half shaft with racing lube
New air dam with brake cooling
bearings
and so much more!

I still have to:

replace shocks
install an LSD
Upgrade T bars to 23/31 (or 33)
install fiberglass IROC tail
Buy fiberglass front and rear bumpers
Install ballast
rebuild transmission
add front oil cooler
get 3 sets of 17 inch CCW's
and so much more!

Be patient and find a car with all the racing goodies.

Lots of track cars for sale but you don't want one of those.

Just my .02

And as for stock. Ha! Tell me how I lose a drag race to a car with 30 less hp supposedly stock! Stock! It makes me giggle.
