Default Weber Rebuild-maybe?

I just came into a 1969 911T Targa. It's in great shape with 42k original miles. The reason for the low miles is because its been sitting in my brother in law's garage for the last 20 years. Because of the long inactive state, the carbs are leaking and out of sync. Is rebuilding and tuning a job a novice could handle or should I use my wife's shoe money and give it to a pro? Next door neighbor Dave O'Bryan ('76 911) suggested this site, and after reveiwing some of your postings looks like you guys really know your stuff.

John:

The answer to your question depends on your experience. Webers are regularly re-built. Sycronizing carbs just takes practice and a simple flow meter.

The last part of tuning is setting the idle mixture. This requires a CO2 meter and some more experience.

You might want to get an appointment with Matt de Maria and see what he thinks. Matt is in Gaithersburg I believe and his shop is second to none.

Welcome to the board.

That's the first project I undertook with my '72. Lots of pieces, but once you're into it you'll find them to be pretty simple to take apart and reassemble. You'll want to find a quality rebuild kit (eg PMO) and a couple books for reference.

Same here, My car had been sitting for 10 years, and the carbs were my first project. When you order the rebuild kit from PMO, they will send a niece write up on the setting/synchronization process. I can lend you the pump vial, float bowl tool, and synchrometer (although with carbs you will probably want one of your own for tweaking).

Dont forget to drain and check the gas tank for rust, that would have saved me from having to clean and rebuild my webers two more times. I resealed my tank using the kit from POR-15.

edit: Oh yeah, welcome to the board!!

Waiting for a little bit warmer weather so I wouldn't be confronted with trying to handle all those little pieces with numb fingers. Scheduled a Dorki workday for March 26, hoping to attract a webhead, but alas, the Dorkis who volunteered to attend, their carb knowledge is limited to that which is a component in beer. So together we will all try to muddle through.

Did you get the rebuilt kit yet? Also get 6 or so cans of Brake Clean. There are some pamphlets/articles on the "Technical" page about your carbs. Read carefully before proceed. Definitely, flush your gas tank and replace gas filter first.
Take a lot of time setting the float levels and cleaning all the little passages.
Don’t ever take the throttle plates off Look at them closely and you will see why

Yup, got my rebuild kits, o rings, gaskets, needle valves, accelerator pump diaphragms, and several tech manuals/books that outline the procedure. The link posted by Justin re: Weber Manual is dead.
