Default If you're bored this weekend

If you have nothing to do, pull up a lawn chair and crack open a cold one. There is a very good chance I will be dropping my engine this weekend to chase down an oil leak. Thought about just doing a partial drop but the wife and kids are off visiting freinds for the next few days, so I have no reason to go for the gusto. It's only been 15 years since I did it the last time. So if you find yourself in Germantown by Northwest HS, you'll be darn close.

What exactly are you trying to do with the engine out?

Trying to track down a leak coming from the top or the oil cooler. Plus I need to clean up the engine compartment. I "had" to remove the original sound/heat proofing material so now there are remnants still attached. I also found one vacuum line without a home. It's leaking too much to drive, I sit at a stop light and create a nice cloud of oil smoke, from the leak dripping onto the cross over pipe.

Check out this thread for replacing common leak items and for how to get to top of oil cooler. In your case ... a partial drop without removing FI may be possible versus an engine removal. If you replace the common things (gaskets and senders) and the 3 o-rings on the on-engine oil cooler ... then it could be your actual on-engine oil cooler.

That is what has happened to me and will soon be doing the partial drop R&R of the on-engine oil cooler with a known good used OEM Behr unit.

I decided to start with a partial drop and see how that goes. Actually I have just about everything that does not have slack disconnected. Damn New Jersey car Can you say rusted nuts. I hope I don't have to replace the whole oil cooler. But I did order and received all the gaskets and seals for the stuff at the front of the engine. I did a search first and already read the thread, thanks.

Up-date- Removed the FI intake and the top cover for the cooler. Top side of the engine around the sensor is a mess. So that gasket is been replaced. Also have access to the top two screws to the oil cooler, will remove that and check it out and replace gaskets. Still may do a partial drop just to try and clean. Have to undo the motor mounts anyway to replace with new inserts, we'll see. I'm hungry and tired so that's all she wrote for tonight.

Well it's 8:45 and the oil cooler is out without dropping the engine. Now the clean up begins. Was not as hard as I thought it was gong to be. Off to AdvanceAuto to buy parts cleaner and more shop towels.

Pics ...? People might want to see what is involved on doing this on a motronic 911 versus a CIS one.

Good job BTW.

Once you take the cooler out be sure to check the case on the front side of where it mounts. Heard some of the Carrera cases are developing small cracks.

Help,
Does anyone have the adaptor for the oil pressure switch? I found the main cause of the oil leak the sensor is stripped and will not come out of the adaptor. Call the local dealerships a couple have the sensor but not the adaptor.
