Sounds like Matt gave the guy the perferct deal. For a couple of hundered $ he gets a phone call with a bunch of details about the conditon of the car. If he wants to buy it he has a top negotiation tool and then he can determine how much of a major service he wants. It may be that the documentation Matt reviews would show some things have already been done. I wouldn't go to a place that has been servicing the car for the same reasons I wouldn't go to the same doctor for a second opinion. Many mechanics are honest, but some know where their butter is spread, and it is not with a out-of-town guy.
He sounds like he already bought the car so he wants to go to the guys buddy to tell him he did OK. I may be wrong....but then again I may be not so wrong! ARF

Dude, why are you waisting your time on a car that you can't even go to look at before you decide to plunk down what ever money you have to in order to get someone to tell you what the condition of the car is. As a professional service advisor I can tell you first hand that it is extremely easy to tell people what they want to hear in order to get their car in the shop. I don't advocate it but when you play on someone's emotions like buying a Porsche people will have a tendancy of hearing only what they want to hear. So you may want to listen to Pari when he tells you that Matt de Maria would be a wise choice, especially since Pari does most of his own wrenching. Secondly, during the year it took me to find my car, I found some really nice clean low mileage Carreras in your part of the country that I did not buy because I was not going out west to buy a car based on someone opinion that I didn't put my hands on first. I find it hard to believe that your considering a car that is from the east coast and has rust when you are in one of the most rust-free areas in the entire United States. What is the matter with you?

Next time just try to speak with Matt directly rather than communicating via voice messages. Relax, I remember how frustrating and painful the buying process is for a nice Porsche, especially because 911's rule! After a while, you start itching and twitching to just get behind the wheel to drive an air cooled classic. Just take your time and be patient, your 911 is sitting in someone's garage/rust free waiting for you to find it. You asked for advice, and people are trying to help you proceed with caution so you don't make a mistake and end up hating the Porsche experience in the long run. Good luck with your search. Nice photos but they don't tell us much, we need more info to make assumptions about the car. How many miles does it have, anything rebuilt(tranny or engine)??? Details, we need more details, we can't comment accurately without the proper history and specifics of the car. Does it have any upgrades? Has it been in a flood? Is it a salvage title? BTW, are you fenderguy from pelican? |

I bought my 88 Targa off the internet. It was in Chicago (little bit of snow). Had a PPI done by an independent shop that the seller drove it too.Had little to no service records. Negotiated with the seller over the phone. When I got the PPI and was satisfied I flew out with a cheque, talked to the PPI shop, went over the car, talked to the owner paid and drove home to the shore. He lent me his tags to get home. The car has some rust on fastners but none on the body. Got to say I am very happy with it 100K miles and 6/7 years later. If Matt or Geof at ASG say the car is good, know of your concern for rust, you are happy with the PPI and price, go for it.One can pick up an immaculate looking car with records and still have unforseen problems. If you do not have much experience driving 911s a test drive is not going to tell you a lot, an experienced mechanic driving it can tell you way more. Good luck.

911 rules.
I for one would like to apologize for the comments made to you. You came to this site looking for advice on a competent independent shop to do a PPI and got far more than you asked for. It is a shame that you had to be scrutinized. You had to both qualify your interest in the car you are looking at and the shop you picked from a recommended list to perform the PPI. I know of both shops and you are in good hands ether way. I don't think your interest in this car was up to anyone here to question in such an unfriendly manner. A “What is it that you like about this one car?” kind of question is not out of line but what you got, in my opinion, was. I am sorry you got the 3rd degree. Long distance car purchases happen all the time and often work out well. As you know an independent PPI and the already completed and passed Carfax are important as they help uncover items such as rust, a flood salvage title or a rolled back ODO to name a few. Just the things that seem to be under scrutiny in this thread. For a site that is proud not to beholden to anyone, welcoming to all and clique free, in my opinion, it sure is not living up to it in this thread on any of the above counts. Dorki. Am I guilty of being PC(A) or just basic civility? Feel free to let me know.
